However, studies on classroom interaction between foreign language (FL) teachers and a group of FL learners are rare, because they are multifaceted and complex. Few techniques or observation systems are able to track the development of student-teacher interactions over time. A potentially powerful tool for researching time series is the State Space Grid technique (Lewis, Lamey & Douglas, 1999 & Hollenstein, 2007). A State Space Grid is a two-dimensional representation of a dynamic system, in which the cells represent all possible states of a system. State Space Grids are suitable for visualizing the dynamic system, and analyzing measures such as cell range, dispersion, cell visits, cell transitions and duration. The present study sets out to explore if and how sequential teacher-group interactions develop dynamically over t...

But did you know that only nine secondary schools in the north of the Netherlands currently offer bilingual education? This means that CLIL education is still not at cycling distance for every teenager in the Netherlands. We do not want to sound too American when saying that no child should be left behind, but we do feel very strongly that the position of CLIL in the north of the Netherlands is something that has to change. Time to take action and navigate the CLIL path, because, who knows, a new group of enthusiastic people might find true north. Let us give you an update.

The observation tool will be used in a professional development programme for scaffolding EFL reading comprehension in secondary schools.

The way a teacher understands and responds to learner utterances can be a powerful pedagogical strategy to scaffold learner language development. In this paperwe present theQuestions and Answers in English Language Teaching coding scheme which can be used to observe and describe the dynamics of teacher questions and student responses in language classrooms. We piloted the instrument in English as a foreign language lessons of four experienced teachers teaching 16 lessons in total. State Space Grids were used to visualize classroom dynamics and quantify intra-individual variability of each lesson. The results show that interactions between teachers and students have the tendency to self-organize and stabilize in one specific area of the grid. Lessons taught by three of the teachers revealed ...
