In her study the author of the article uses two works by Ihara Saikaku, namely Nippon eitaigura (The Japanese Family Storehouse, 1688) and Seken munesan’yō, (Worldly Mental Calculations, 1692), both of which belong to the townspeople series (chōninmono) subcategory. Contrary to the samurai ethos that prohibited the warrior class from dealing with money, the urban commoners’ philosophy urged them towards hard work and the accumulation of riches. Ihara Saikaku, while creating the image of a fair urban commoner, praised a methodical life that demanded taming temptations, which he refered to as poisons that threated self-discipline.

The concept of washoku itself is relatively young, because it came into use at the end of the 19th century, in order to distinguish between native and European cuisine (called yōshoku), and nowadays refers to the broadly understood culinary tradition which is also the cultural heritage of the Japanese. Its forms of expression can be found in the ways of preparing dishes, eating habits and in the approach to the culinary culture itself, which is under the influence of tradition, ritual calendar and social patterns of the Japanese.

Due to the polygamous character of the court society (in the 8th–12th centuries) along with the hedonistic ideals within the erotic culture of the townspeople (during the 17th–19th centuries), that which was considered of the highest value in love was an opulent and diversified love life, not the faithfulness of the lovers. The point of the article is to reconstruct the ideals of sensual love based on the literary works of the court tale genre (ōchō monogatari) and the love tales (kōshoku mono) by Saikaku Ihara.

NHK, as a public institution, modeled on the British BBC, conducts a so-called "public mission", meaning active and creative participation in shaping social and civil attitudes as well as personality models amongst the Japanese. One of the ways in which NHK carries out its mission is taiga dorama ("Big River Drama"), NHK's flag productions released yearly since 1963. The creators of these year-long TV series design great national epics recounting historic events and portraying famous historical figures. "Big River Dramas" do not only retell the historical events, but also rekindle the interest of the Japanese in their own history and culture. As the carriers of collective memory they contribute to developing its three elements: cognitive (propagating historical knowledge amongst the society), emotional (creating certain attitudes towards history) and behavioral (developing national tourism).

Abstract: The aim of this article is to introduce Ise monogatari (Tales of Ise)-the most outstanding example of the court tales genre called uta monogatari (lyrical prose). Amongst court tales (ōchō monogatari), uta monogatari proves to be an extremely original type of prose, where the storyline plays a secondary role while the world described is mostly depicted through the poetic recreation of reality. The element that links all the episodes of Ise monogatari into a whole is the figure of mukashi otoko, "a Man of Old", implying Ariwara Narihira (825–880), a poet and nobleman. The article presents the main characteristics of the genre, the worldview and social background, the reasons for which this literary work is indentified as permeated with the beauty of courtly elegance, miyabi.
