Nowatorstwo idzie w parze z solidnym zapleczem faktograficznym i historycznym; książka z jednej strony dostarcza wzorcowo usystematyzowanej wiedzy na temat używanych pojęć i orientacji badawczych, z drugiej zaś inspiruje oryginalnymi, odkrywczymi tezami interpretacyjnymi, wspartymi przekonującą, kunsztowną argumentacją.

Lata 1950–1955: likwidacja większości zbiornic i powierzenie zadań ochrony i repartycji zasobów bibliotecznych Zbiornicy Księgozbiorów Zabezpieczonych w Katowicach.
This article is a critical reflection on selected interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Clav... more This article is a critical reflection on selected interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Clavier-Übung III, including the problematic issue of the symbolism of numbers. From those analyses, a theoretical model has been created, inspired by Umberto Eco’s writings and consisting of the following levels of interpretation: (1) intentio auctoris – authorial intentions; (2) intentio operis – interpretations that arise from the semiotic code of the piece; (3) intentio lectoris / intentio auditoris – readings that result from the recipient’s own perception of the written text (intentio lectoris) or an auditory experience (intentio auditoris); and (4) intentio actoris – meanings that are shaped by decisions made by the performer(s). The model was developed in the course of studying the Clavier-Übung III and provides a framework for describing the process of negotiating the meanings of the collection’s constituent pieces. Additionally, it enables a better understanding of the controversial issue of number symbolism within Clavier Übung III, which—as is argued in the article—is shaped between intentio operis and intentio lectoris. Last but not least, the model presented takes into consideration an often neglected aspect of construing the meaning in music, namely the part played by the audience and performers.

The first of those is a collection of handwritten copies of ten keyboard concertos by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, made by Georg Amft based on materials that originated from the music collections of Sara Levy and Zippora Wulff. This paper primarily focuses on the Concerto in A Minor, W 26. Amft’s copy of that piece was made in 1900, based on a manuscript kept in the Royal Library in Berlin (Königliche Bibliothek); it bears an inscription attesting that the copy was made from an autograph. Seeing as Amft’s Vorlage is now lost, the Warsaw document appears to be an important indirect source for an early version of W 26.
The second part of the paper is a discussion of a collection of organ chorales compiled by Johann Jeremias du Grain (a singer, organist, harpsichordist, composer, and a student of Georg Philipp Telemann based in Elbląg and Gdańsk). The manuscript was known before World War II; it went missing during or after the war, but has now been rediscovered in Warsaw. It features organ arrangements of psalm and chorale melodies performed as part of the Calvinist service in St. Elisabeth’s Church, which makes this collection a one-of-a-kind source on the musical life of Gdańsk’s Reformed Evangelical congregation in the first half of the eighteenth century.

Hans-Joachim Schulze has suggested that Bach encountered these Italian instrumental works as a result of a trip by Prince Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar to the Netherlands. This article suggests an alternative route for Bach to have gained copies of Italian concertos, namely via the Halle and Leipzig bookseller Adam Christoph Sellius. He traded in sheet music published by Estienne Roger in Amsterdam and also in French printed music, probably imported through his contacts in the Netherlands.

However, there is an evidence to suggest that 'Anmuthige Clavier-Ubung' was an important reference point to Bach’s 'Clavier Übung III' (Leipzig 1739). The two works (1) include stile antico and stile moderno keyboard music in one volume, and (2) the theme of the first part of the Fugue in E-flat major (BWV 552/2) seems to originate from Krieger’s 'Anmuthige Clavier-Ubung'.

The paper discusses three basic musical forms used in Johann Sebastian Bach's Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book): the melodic chorale (the most representative and hence known as 'the Orgelbüchlein chorale'), ornamental chorale and canon chorale (due consideration is given to the role of Andreas Armsdorff as the likely forerunner of this type of chorale). Also discussed are the divergences from this pattern (particularly In dir ist Freude, BWV 615) and the special role of the pedal part in Bach's cycle is emphasised. The body of the article concentrates on the relationship of the music and lyrics of the Orgelbüchlein and places Bach's work within a larger framework of ties between rhetorics and music, with a brief recapitulation of older studies in this area (Spitta, Schweitzer). Consequently, the affect theory and the theory of rhetorical fi gures in music are given due attention; the parallels between composing a speech and a musical piece are also drawn upon. The latter concept is perhaps the least apparent in Orgelbüchlein but an analysis of the discussed chorales in terms of inventio, dispositio and elocutio does not seem too far-fetched. Finally, the context of Lutheran religious tradition that assigned a particularly elevated role to the musical arts is called upon. The paper closes with a cursory analysis of the chorale Jesu, meine Freude, BWV 610 within the framework of musical rhetorics.

However, its main and crucial part consists of the analysis of the first part of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantata, "Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis", BWV 21. The emphasis is on the lyrics (biblical quotations and Salomon Franck’s religious poetry) and musical solutions’ identification and their intensification of the text. As a consequence of this, many musicalrhetorical figures of the cantata are described and thus, it has been concluded that this composition is not only a musical work but more a literary and musical one.

An analysis of the prosodic element of Jasieński’s language suggests that his experiments paved the way for the 20th-century shift of the euphonic paradigm. The article also tries to describe Jasieński’s most outré futuristic ideas with the help of a revised concept of the polyphony of literature (devised by the author, it broadens the Bakhtinian understanding of the term).
