This section addresses the notion of sonic healing - healing derived from music and mantra - within my larger framework of healing as a totality. The inherent power within sound itself is addressed as having palliative potential. Analysis is drawn from fieldwork conducted in West Bengal and Sikkim, India with Bāul singers and Nepali traditional healers.

Bāul singers formed a unique philosophical synthesis, drawing influence from tantric Hindu, Buddhist, and Sufi Muslim traditions. As a marginalized, esoteric group of heterogeneous practitioners, the Bāuls operate outside the purview of institutionalized South Asian religious traditions. The elaborate theory of bodily praxis (sādhanā) applied by these practitioners is encrypted within song lyrics, which are publicly performed. These bodily practices focus on perfecting the human body as a center of sacred powers. Bāul esoteric teachings are transmitted orally, and their corpus of oral literature obliquely refers to the methods for obtaining mystical rapture and psycho-physiological transformation.
