As for the film itself, Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge called “Anora,” a “whirlwind sex-work romance” that “sparkles like the tinsel in its leading lady’s hair.” Moreover, the film is “a profane kick,” Debruge writes in his review. “But seen in the context of Baker’s recurring fixations — from “Starlet” to “Red Rocket” — it stresses his belief that sex work is real work, that it’s more central to society than society wants to admit, and that by identifying with those we typically objectify, we can’t help but love them.”

Directed by Sean Baker, “Anora” follows a stripper and sex worker named Anora (Mikey Madison), who falls for Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn), the son of wealthy Russian oligarchs. However, when Ivan’s parents catch wind of their son’s spontaneous wedding, they send their handler and his muscle to put an end to their marriage.

The film also stars Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, Aleksei Serebryakov, Darya Ekamasova and others.
