Among the remedial reading instruction methodologies, two fundamentally different strategies are usually applied: to ease the basic instructions and supplement them by bootstrapping exercises and to apply the alternative strategy for syllable-blending and word-decoding. We aimed at developing a digital application that would provide alternative and easier way to reading acquisition for the readingdisabled children. As a result, the Web-based learning tool (WEBLET) was developed for the remedial treatment of Russian-speaking dyslexics. In the current paper, we present its architecture, methodological background, and the first results of its piloting in poor readers with learning disability. The study confirmed that the implicit learning and an acquisition of the procedural knowledge helped children with reading disorderLituanistikos katedraVytauto Didžiojo universiteta

С. Twins tend to lag behind singletons in their language development, but the causes are still unknown. There are many factors affecting the development of twins’ language such as low birth weight, genetic factors, gender, amount of input, intensive interaction between the twins themselves, less interaction with adults than singletons, and many other factors. A commonly held belief is that twins develop their own autonomous and unique communication, also known as ‘secret language’, or ‘private language’. The specific twin language is unique for each pair of twins and cannot be understood by others, not even by their parents. The purpose of this study is threefold: 1) to present a unique Corpus of Lithuanian Twin Language; 2) to discuss the main principles of the Corpus development and methodological issues; and 3) to present the res...

In the course of investigation the interrogative utterances used in spontaneous language were classified according to function and structure. The quantitative analysis of the data accessed from the Corpus of Spoken Lithuanian was based on a special computer program CHILDES. The results have shown that spoken Lithuanian gives preference to closed interrogative utterances rather than open interrogative utterances. Closed interrogative utterances in most cases use no interrogative particles; utterances with interrogative particles are much less frequent. In the latter subgroup interrogative particles mostly occur in the utterance-initial (e.g. ar, gal etc.) rather than utterance-final position (e.g. taip, ne, ane etc.). In the class of open interrogative utterances adverbial modifier utterances prevail; in the latter subclas...

Results of the study inspire a discussion on a possibility to evaluate both language competence and language performance of the same subject on the basis of his/her distribution of parts of speech in the discourse.

One well-known controversial issue in this area is children’s symmetrical judgments of universally quantified sentences. Symmetrical judgments are elicited when a child is asked to judge if a sentence including a universal quantifier describes a visual context depicting an incomplete distributive relation. The following three judgment types have been included in the set of symmetrical judgment types in the literature (examples from Kang, 2001).

During the last years, the "Corpus of Spoken Lithuanian" (developed at Vytautas Magnus University; 225,000 words; 80 hours of digitalized audio recordings) has been syntactically annotated, and this has enabled complex automatized syntactic analysis. In the present paper, one of the first such studies is presented and its results are discussed. The corpus linguistics methodology has been employed. The paper deals with the frequency and basic types of attributive clauses in spoken Lithuanian language. The results of the study have highlighted that attributive clauses tend to be more frequent (up to 15% of all subordinate clauses) in public speech, and they are significantly less frequent (up to 7% of all subordinate clauses) in private spontaneous speech. The position of a subordinate clause after the head noun is unmarked an...

The experimentwas conducted in Saint Petersburg (Russia) testing 9–10 year old children. The experimental group consisted of 12 children with dyslexia, and a control group contained 12 peers without any developmental disorders. Each of the subjects performed two tasks: storytelling according to a picture sequence and retelling another picture sequence. The narrative elicitation procedure was controlled from the perspective of story complexity, task order and story mode. The descriptive statistical analysis evaluated the impact of particular types of narrative elicitation on a quality of narrative in the experimental and control groups. A statistically significant difference of the impact of task order, narrative mode, and story complexity on the narrative of dyslexic children encourages to study the methodology of narrative analysis even more comprehensively and be especially careful in selecting visual...

In English, a large array of tools is available, while in most other languages, the selection is more limited. Importantly, assessment tools are often simple translations and do not take into consideration specific linguistic and psycholinguistic parameters of the target languages. As a first step in meeting the needs for comparable assessment tools, the Comprehensive Aphasia Test is currently being adapted into a number of languages spoken in Europe. In this article, some key challenges encountered in the adaptation process and the solutions to ensure that the resulting assessment tools are linguistically and culturally equivalent, are proposed. Specifically, we focus on challenges and solutions related to the use of imageability, frequency, word length, spelling-to-sound regularity and sentence length and complexity as underlying propertie...

We propose that the order of acquisition of quantifiers is related to features inherent to the meaning of each term. Four specific dimensions of the meaning and use of quantifiers are found to capture robust similarities in the order of acquisition of quantifiers in similar ways across 31 languages, representing 11 language types.
