Michael Ward
Michael K. Ward completed his Bachelors and Masters degrees at California State University Northridge (CSUN) and his Ph.D. at Claremont Graduate University. He teaches a range of courses in World History, Western Civilizations and the history of Latin America at Ventura College, where he also serves as Social Sciences department chair, and U.S. History and Native American History as a Lecturer at CSUN. His background includes an earlier career as an artist-illustrator and for more than three decades, extensive involvement with indigenous Americans, a connection that continues to influence his perspectives in art and interpretations in history. Michael has published articles on a range of topics for the Journal of Social Sciences, the Encyclopedia of Alabama, the New England Journal of History, and contributed to "The History of Hindu India: From Ancient to Modern Times," a textbook by the late CSUN Emeritus Professor Dr. Shiva G. Bajpai in conjunction with Hinduism Today Magazine, and a five-part video series of this same publication. As an illustrator known for his portrayals of indigenous California, Dr. Ward recently completed a series of paintings for the film “West of the West: Tales From California’s Channel Islands,” and others related to the “Island of the Blue Dolphins/ Lone Woman of San Nicholas Island,” and another series of images related to Chumash Indian culture and history in the northern Santa Barbara Channel Islands, as part of the film "Channel Islands National Park: Treasure in the Sea," for the National Park Service.
