Rad nudi prevod staroengleske elegije „Ženina tugovanka” („The Wife’s Lament” ili „The Wife’s Com... more Rad nudi prevod staroengleske elegije „Ženina tugovanka” („The Wife’s Lament” ili „The Wife’s Complaint”) na srpski jezik, kao i obrazloženja prevodnih rešenja utemeljenih na različitim tumačenjima dela, koja su proistekla iz gramatičkih nejasnoća staroengleskog jezika kao i kompozicije same elegije. Imajući u vidu neizbežnu spekulativnost koju tumačenje ovakvog dela podrazumeva, rad će takođe pokušati da se odmakne od nagađanja vezanih za događaje u pesmi i da se usmeri na stilske i formalne aspekte elegije i atmosferu koju proizvode, kao i da razmotri ideološki značaj vraćanja na književno delo kao što je „Ženina tugovanka” u savremenim istraživanjima književnosti. Ova elegija redak je primer staroengleske poezije u kome su teme ljudske patnje i prolaznosti ovozemaljskih stvari ispevane u ženskom rodu, što otvara pitanje „ženskog” posmatranja sveta, drugim rečima pitanje telesnosti i spiritualne prirode žene koje određeni kritičari vide kao izuzetno značajno i nedovoljno isticano u istraživanju staroengleske književnosti. Bez obzira na više mogućih prevoda a samim tim i više interpretatrivnih opcija, dirljiva liričnost kojom je „Ženina tugovanka” prožeta predstavlja snažnu kritiku herojskog društva u kome obespravljena žena uspeva da artikuliše svoj bunt kao prigušeni glas antiheroja, marginalaca i izgnanika u vrlo jasno i surovo ustrojenoj ratničkoj zajednici. U takvim okolnostima, suštinski pasivna anglosaksonska žena u zatočeništvu svojim neinhibiranim govorom afirmiše sopstvenu ličnost, razmišljanja i osećanja.

The poem offers a unique platform for examining what Coleridge defines as “the willing suspension of disbelief”, the phrase thought to be the poet’s most important critical formulation.

In an effort to look into the possibilities which would innovate the tourist market in less devel... more In an effort to look into the possibilities which would innovate the tourist market in less developed branches of cultural tourism in Serbia, this paper explores the potentials of the travel piece Epic Serbia by the renowned Serbian novelist Milisav Savić for literary tourism development in the country and the region. Epic Serbia resulted from a sort of pilgrimage along the paths of Serbian oral poetry that Milisav Savić undertook from 2015 to 2016. He revisited, among other places, his own home region of Raška in south-western Serbia, the first capital of the Serbian medieval state and home to some of the most important UNESCO-protected structures in Serbia. Savić’s poetic travel journey brought the epic heroes of the Serbian oral poetry into focus, linking them to the geographical places, churches, monasteries, battlefields etc., which are all important part of the Serbian cultural heritage today. The aim of the paper is to present the results of a tailor-made questionnaire concerning the level of potential tourists’ interest in literary tourism, in this case epic tourism closely linked to religious and rural tourism. This would further lead to forming a new tourist “package” arrangement within the field of literary tourism, an almost non-existent branch of cultural tourism in Serbia, which would innovate the market and create room for an increase in the number of domestic and inbound tourists.

Focusing on Oscar Wilde’s play "Salomé", the paper aims to discuss and analyse the literature of ... more Focusing on Oscar Wilde’s play "Salomé", the paper aims to discuss and analyse the literature of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and its connection to the artistic tendencies of the period. Wilde wrote the play in 1893, at the very start of the period in art known as Art Nouveau, characterized by the extensive use of symbols and sinuous line as means of expression and artistic delving into the realm of the unconscious. The paper takes on "Salomé" as a paradigm of symbolist and aesthetic literature and examines how the symbols and literary devices in the play create a language that reflects the “new vocabulary” of Art Nouveau, contained, among other places, in Aubrey Beardsley’s illustrations featured in the first English edition of Salomé in 1894.

Starting from the evident interest that Thomas Hardy’s novel "Tess of the d’Urbervilles" has insp... more Starting from the evident interest that Thomas Hardy’s novel "Tess of the d’Urbervilles" has inspired in the film and TV industry throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this paper centers on the comparison between Hardy’s novel and its film adaptation in 1979 by Roman Polanski; more specifically on the aspects of tragedy found in Hardy’s nineteenth-century novel and the manner in which they are included in the structure of Polanski’s film. The paper tackles the functional features of the elements of tragedy such as the strict logical and structural organization of plot, the heroine’s hybris and fatal flaw, as well as Hardy’s view of Tess as “a perfect specimen of a womankind”, and examines the ways in which the film, which can be seen as generally truthful to the original, conveys a subtly different understanding of Tess’s character and fate.

Polazeći od značajnog mesta koje su u stvaralačkom procesu određeni teoretičari postmodernizma da... more Polazeći od značajnog mesta koje su u stvaralačkom procesu određeni teoretičari postmodernizma davali nostalgiji i melanholiji, rad istražuje pre svega mogućnost, a zatim i funkciju lirsko-melanholičnog izraza u romanima "Objava broja 49" Tomasa Pinčona i "Fama o biciklistima" Svetislava Basare. Kroz parodičnu samoreferencijalnost postmodernističkog jezika koja preispituje ljudsko postojanje u postmodernim okolnostima, promaljaju se lirski fragmenti čiji poetski jezik referiše na narative iz književnih epoha koji su mogli da budu neparodični izraz nadahnute autentičnosti. Nedostatak literature na temu lirsko-melanholičnog izraza u postmodernističkoj prozi svedoči o njegovoj skrajnutosti, koja nije neočekivana imajući u vidu da parodično dekonstruisanje realističkog predstavljanja, što postmodernistička književnost u samoj svojoj biti radi, ostavlja nevelik prostor za poetiku melanholičnog i lirskog. Iz tog razloga ovaj rad postavlja pitanje otkuda u samoreferencijalnim, parodičnim romanima kao što su Objava i Fama jedna sasvim pokretačka tuga i suze glavne junakinje Objave Edipe Mas pred umetničkom slikom ili melanholija u pisanim tragovima srednjevekovnog kralja Karla Ružnog i kapetana Kvinsdejla u Fami. Lirsko-melanholični izraz, iako na prvi pogled neprimetan u svojoj rasutosti, može da se čita kao vid suprotstavljenog narativa samoreferencijalnosti, i kao takav predstavlja veoma važan i nedovoljno istražen element postmodernističkog jezika. Rad će na primeru ova dva romana pokazati da se lirsko i melanholično u postmodernističkom romanu javljaju, često jetko i sa srdžbom očajnika, kao opomena o nestajanju duhovnosti iz vrednosnog sistema savremenog pojedinca.

The paper explores different theoretical views of parody as one of the key elements of postmodern... more The paper explores different theoretical views of parody as one of the key elements of postmodern literature and how it is employed in Pynchon’s The Crying of Lot 49. The paper tackles parody’s structural and functional features, such as allusive structural inclusion of different texts into the text of the novel and the effect produced by means of that inclusion, the possible polemical intentions of parody and the manner in which the polemic is induced and executed. The paper shows how Pynchon’s parodic practice in The Crying of Lot 49 uses past cultural and language forms in order to make an evaluating context for those forms in the present time, and how the novel’s different parodies are peculiarly randomized in an effort to both obfuscate and shed light on, to state nothingness as well as to inspire subversion.

Starting from John Osborne’s negative reaction to theatre critics’ and journalists’ perception of... more Starting from John Osborne’s negative reaction to theatre critics’ and journalists’ perception of "Look Back in Anger"’s idiosyncratic language as “angry”, as well as their perception of the protagonist Jimmy Porter as a representative of the Angry Young Man movement, this paper considers sarcasm as one of the key aggressive rhetorical devices used in the language of the play. Osborne thought that the specific, even revolutionary rhetoric of his play was in most cases misunderstood and wrongly conveyed in theatre adaptations as “angry”, which made the performance lose the edge that the language of the play had the potential for. "Look Back in Anger" provides an insight into the Porters’ lower-class mundane dailiness, charged with verbal aggression and intertextual allusiveness stemming from deeper political, historical and social issues of mid-twentieth-century Britain. This paper focuses on Jimmy Porter’s prevalent use of sarcasm as a weapon in his personal battle, by taking John Haiman’s "Talk Is Cheap: Sarcasm, Alienation, and the Evolution of Language", to illustrate how the language of "Look Back in Anger" coincides with Haiman’s conclusions on the theoretical and applied characteristics of sarcasm in contemporary society.

The paper focuses on Drummond de Andrade’s poem “In the middle of the road” in an attempt to isol... more The paper focuses on Drummond de Andrade’s poem “In the middle of the road” in an attempt to isolate and investigate the conflicting aspects relating to the poem, such as the ones relating to its hermeticism and the translation challenges that “simple originals” set before the translator. An overarching analysis of both formal and thematic aspects of the poem brings to light its rich interpretative capacities that were disputed initially by the critics due to its ostensible formal and thematic poverty and banality. The paper proposes viewing of the poem through opposing concepts of the inside and the outside and the relationship between the individual and the society, which implies a constant collision between the hermeticism of the individual’s personal space and the striving to leave that space in order to establish communication in the society the individual belongs to.

In the last years, Serbia has witnessed coming into being of various media forms that all provide... more In the last years, Serbia has witnessed coming into being of various media forms that all provide social, political and cultural criticism through acrid comedy, parody and satire. The paper centers on sarcasm as one of the key aggressive rhetorical devices used in the language of popular satirical portal Njuz.net, with an overview of the structural and functional characteristics of sarcasm in contemporary communication. The paper explores how language aggressiveness manages to create an affirmative context in which the domineering structures of the official discourse are undermined by marginalized alternative discourses, as well as how such content, disseminated mainly through social networks and blogs and charged with verbal aggression and intertextual allusiveness stemming from deeper political, historical and social issues, succeeds in providing a narrative of kinship among those who often see it as the last recourse to sanity.
