Professor John Fitzpatrick
15 July 1948 – 14 May 2014
Professor Fitzpatrick was an Irish clinician scientist and is among the world’s most eminent urologists and a leader in the transformation in the care of men suffering from prostate cancer.
Prof. Fitzpatrick was one of the earliest advocates of the use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) as a means of early detection of the disease.
Prof. Fitzpatrick was Emeritus Professor of surgery at University College Dublin (UCD) and was Head of Research at the Irish Cancer Society.
He had an active engagement with the IACR for many years where he particularly enjoyed chairing the session for oral poster communication, keeping a regimented approach to timing each presenter in his own unique style.
About this award
The Prof. John Fitzpatrick Award for Best Oral Poster Presentation was created in 2015 to commemorate Prof. Fitzpatrick’s legacy in cancer research. The award is presented to the best oral presentation of a poster by an early stage cancer researcher at the annual IACR conference during a designated scientific session. The ability to communicate cancer research effectively in only 3 minutes is extremely difficult and this session is one of the highlights of the IACR conference.
