Gordon McKelvie
I am a historian of England and Scotland during the late medieval and early modern periods. My research considers the importance of social structures and cultural values for understanding the period.
My PhD focused on the Statutes of Livery, their development and their enforcement in late medieval and early Tudor England. It was primarily concerned with the relationship between law-making in parliament and law-enforcement in the localities. I am in the process of producing a monograph based on this research.
Since completing my PhD I have worked on several research projects, notably AHRC funded 'Mapping the Medieval Countryside' and 'Inquisitions Post Mortem of Richard III' projects. I have also worked for the New Victoria County History of Hampshire.
Along with research I have taught various aspects of British and European History from the 11th to 20th centuries and have been fortunate enough to work at the University of Winchester, the Department of Continuing Education at Oxford University, the University of Chichester and Portsmouth University.
Supervisors: Professor Michael Hicks and Dr. Neil Murphy
