Bolt (firearms)

A bolt is a mechanical part of a firearm that blocks the rear of the chamber while the propellant burns, but moves out of the way to allow another cartridge or shell to be inserted in the chamber.

Description

In manually operated firearms, such as bolt-action, lever-action, and pump-action rifles and shotguns, the bolt is held fixed by its locking lugs during firing, forcing all the expanding gas forward, and is manually withdrawn to chamber another round.

In an automatic or semi-automatic firearm, the bolt cycles back and forward between each shot, propelled by recoil or expanding gas (back) or the recoil spring (forward). When it moves back, the extractor pulls the spent casing from the chamber. When it moves forward, it strips a cartridge from the magazine and pushes it into the chamber. Once the case is clear of the chamber, the ejector kicks the case out of the weapon. The extractor and firing pin are often integral parts of the bolt. The slide of a semi-automatic pistol is a form of bolt.

Bolt was a social networking and video website active from 1996 to 2007 before reopening in April 2008. It was shut down for a period of one year due to copyright violations leading to bankruptcy. It was acquired by new owners on January 4, 2008 and operated successfully for several months before announcing plans to go offline in October 2008.

1996-2006

In 1996 Bolt.com was started as a teen community, by a team including Dan Pelson, Lee Morgenroth, David Cancel and Jane Mount as part of Concrete Media. In many ways Bolt.com was ahead of its time. It was among the first social networking sites to appear on the Internet. It offered a wide range of unique services including a daily horoscope, chat rooms, message boards, tagbooks (a knowledge market feature), photo albums, internet radio, browser games, blogs, e-cards, an instant messenger service, a clubs feature (giving people with similar interests a common message board), and badges (a system of awards for user profiles). An e-mail service was hosted, but it was discontinued due to email companies such as Yahoo and Google providing between 1 and nearly 3 gigabytes of email storage for free, rendering Bolt's email service obsolete. This was done without notifying its email subrscribers. Also bolt was one of the first sites to give its members their own web page. As the site aged it relied more on corporate sponsorships. In 2002 the badges slowly started leaning towards company sponsored badges, which led to Bolt becoming more commercial with an increase of ads into the users' activities. Some notable ones included the Verizon Wireless, Gillette, and Sony badges.

The length is usually either 40 or 100 yards, but varies depending on the fabric being referred to, for example, a bolt of canvas is traditionally 39 yards. Arnold "Arnie" Lundberg is a mutant who was born with the right hand side of his face hideously scarred. Children in his local town mocked and ridiculed him, as did many others. The result of this was a beating that left him badly hurt and comatose. As he lay comatose, he heard the recorded voice of U-Go Girl (Edie Sawyer), recorded for publicity reasons, which stirred him out of his inert state. He soon revived completely.

Arnie Lundberg claimed to be the biggest X-Force fan in the world, especially of U-Go Girl. He blamed the Orphan for killing his favorite member. It was eventually revealed that he was a mutant and was using his powers to control a small town in Minnesota. He was also psychically sending images of U-Go Girl into the Orphan's mind in hope that Guy would attack him. Preparing for the attack, he unleashed an army of the dead to attack Solomon O'Sullivan's super team, O-Force. The Orphan arrived and saved the team and confronted Arnie who sent him flying out a window and into the undead army. Guy was saved by X-Statix and Guy convinced Arnie to turn his powers to healing the mess he has called. First sending him to Charles Xavier after having presented him as deceased to the public, the Orphan then instead nominated Arnie for X-Statix membership so that they could keep an eye on him.

Firearm (tool)

A firearm can be used primarily as a tool, instead of as a weapon, to project either single or multiple objects at high velocity through a controlled explosion. The firing is achieved by the gases produced through rapid, confined burning of a propellant. This process of rapid burning is technically known as deflagration. In older firearms, this propellant was typically black powder, but modern firearms use smokeless powder, cordite, or other propellants. Many firearms such as mortars do not have rifled bores to impart spin to the projectile for improved flight stability, such as is seen with firearms used as weapons, although some are rifled. The lack of rifling can prevent tangling of grappling hook lines, buoy lines, and such, although some firearms intended for use at the longest ranges in these applications are rifled.
