G. B. Jones

G. B. Jones is a Canadian artist, filmmaker, musician, and publisher of zines based in Toronto, Canada. Her art work has been featured at galleries around the world, and her films screened at numerous film festivals, both in Canada and abroad. Her most recent musical project is Opera Arcana.

Music

In the early 1980s Jones joined her first band, the experimental industrial electropunk group, Bunny & the Lakers. Led by songwriter Peter Morgan and including Howard Pope among other fluctuating members, the band released one limited edition LP record called Numbers, which has since become a collector's item. The trio performed live only once in Toronto.

From the early 1980s to the late 1990s, Jones performed with the experimental post-punk band Fifth Column, playing drums, guitar and background vocals, and was one of the co-founders of the group. The band's first album, To Sir With Hate was released in 1985.

The group went on to release three singles and two more albums. All-Time Queen of the World was released in 1990 and a video for the song "Like This" was produced. Their last album, 36-C, contained perhaps their best-known and most controversial song, "All Women Are Bitches". Released prior to the album as a single by K Records in 1992, "All Women Are Bitches" was reviewed by Everett True and chosen "Single of the Week" by the UK paper Melody Maker. Along with the "36-C" album, the band released two more singles and also appeared on a number of compilation albums and film soundtracks. In 2002, Fifth Column's last release appeared on the Kill Rock Stars compilation album Fields and Streams.

G. B. Jones (book)

G. B. Jones, edited by Steve LaFreniere, is a book of the drawings and artwork of G. B. Jones, published by a New York City gallery in 1996 as a limited edition.

The book features essays and commentaries on the work of G. B. Jones by Dennis Cooper, Kevin Killian, Dodie Bellamy, Vaginal Davis, Jena von Brücker, Caroline Azar, Jeffery Kennedy, and several others.

As well as featuring her drawings, it also includes posters and still frames from her films The Troublemakers, which features Caroline Azar and Bruce LaBruce; The Yo-Yo Gang, which features Caroline Azar, Leslie Mah, Donna Dresch, Beverly Breckenridge, Deke Nihilson and Bruce LaBruce; and The Lollipop Generation, featuring Jena von Brucker, Mark Ewert, Vaginal Davis and Mitchell Watkins.

The book included the record covers and posters of Fifth Column, the band G. B. is a member of, and reproductions of pages featuring writing and art from publications she was co-editor of, such as Double Bill and J.D.s, the zine that first brought her drawings to public attention. A well-known aspect of her early drawings is the appropriation of the fetish art of Tom of Finland, reinterpreting both his drawings and Vivienne Westwood's punk exploitation of them on her T-shirts for her shop SEX. These are known as the Tom Girl drawings. Unlike Tom's work, in Jones' drawings the women depicted seek to continually undermine authority figures. The drawings have appeared in fanzines, magazines, and books, as well as on posters, record covers and special edition T-shirts, such as the t-shirt for Will Munro's Club Vazaleen, and in galleries throughout North America and Europe.

Gáb

The cuneiform sign gáb, (also qáb), is an uncommon-use sign of the Amarna letters, and other cuneiform texts. It is possibly an equivalent sign for the later version of DAGAL (extensive Sumerogram), , with an, , replacing the earlier version, the "star" (as Dingir), contained within the cuneiform sign. This later version of DAGAL is somewhat similar to gáb, (a 'rectangular-box form'). The meaning of "DAGAL", Akkadian language for "extensive" – compares to the Amarna letters use of gáb as Akkadian language "gabbu", English language for "all", or "all (of us)"

For Rainey's version of EA letters 359-379 (only 10 actual letters)gáb is only used to spell Akkadian "gabbu", and 2 words using qáb, mostly for Akkadian "qabû", English "to speak", and in EA 259 (the "King of Battle, Tablet I"), for "battle", Akkadian "qablu".

Cuneiform gáb/qáb is mosly used as a syllabic for the three characters of the sign. It is within a small group of signs that are composed of 1- or 2-vertical strokes (at right or left), the other signs being no. 535 Ib (cuneiform), no. 536 ku (cuneiform) (only 1-vertical, left and right), no. 537 lu (cuneiform), and no 575, ur (cuneiform).

Głąb [ɡwɔmp] (German: Neumühl) is a settlement in the administrative district of Gmina Kołobrzeg, within Kołobrzeg County, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, in north-western Poland.
