Imphal East district

Imphal East district (Pron:/ˈɪmfəl or ɪmˈfɑːl/) is one of the 9 districts of Manipur state in northeastern India. As of 2011 it is the second most populous district in the state, after Imphal West.

History

This district came into existence on 18 June 1997.

Imphal East District came into existence on 18-06-1997 with its headquarters at Porompat occupying the eastern part of Imphal District. The District is situated in two separate valleys of the state namely Central Valley and Jiribam Valley. The total area of District is 469.44 km². approximately. The District is situated at an altitude 790 metres above the M.S. Level. The climate of the District is salubrious and Monsoon is tropical. The minimum temperature goes down to 0.6degree Celsius in winter and 41 degree Celsius in summer. It has no rail network and hence communication is entirely dependent on roads except Jiribam Sub-Division bordering Cachar District of Assam where there is a railhead. The District is connected with N.H. 39, N.H. 53 and N.H. 150.

Imphal

The city of Imphal (/ˈɪmpəl/,  Imphal.ogg ) is the capital of the Indian state of Manipur. The ruins of the Palace of Kangla, the royal seat of the erstwhile Kingdom of Manipur, are in the city centre, surrounded by a moat.

History

The Battle of Imphal took place between March and July 1944, during World War II.

Geography and climate

Imphal is located at 24°49′N 93°57′E / 24.82°N 93.95°E / 24.82; 93.95 in extreme eastern India, with an average elevation of 786 metres (2,579 ft). It has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cwa) with mild, dry winters and a hot monsoon season. July temperatures average about 29 °C (84 °F); January is the coldest month, with average lows near 4 °C (39 °F). The city receives about 1,320 mm (52 in) of rain, with June the wettest month. The highest recorded temperature was 35.6 °C (96.1 °F), most recently on 22 May 2009, and the lowest average temperature was −2.7 °C (27.1 °F) on 10 January 1970.
