Urgent was a short-lived American melodic rock band from New York City featuring former and future members of Sterling, Vendetta and Diving For Pearls. Urgent founding member Donnie Kehr and guitarist Yul Vazquez have both gone on to highly successful stage, movie and television acting careers.

Biography

Formed by brothers Michael (vocals, guitar), Don (vocals, keyboards) and Steve Kehr (drums), and rounded out by Miami native Yul Vazquez (lead guitar) and Kylph Black (bass), Urgent rose from the East Coast in the mid-1980s. Initially looked at by Epic Records, the band wound up signing with newly formed EMI subsidiary Manhattan Records and turned to British rock legends Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson for the production of their debut album.

Cast the First Stone was released in 1985 and became a minor success with the single "Running Back" peaking at #79 on the Billboard Hot 100. A second single off the album, "Love Can Make You Cry", was also featured on the successful Iron Eagle soundtrack album.

History

Sharing the name of a band from New York, the Canadian band Urgent was from Toronto, Ontario, Canada and formed when drummer Kim Hunt left the band Zon in 1982 and connected with bassist Doug Baynham and guitarist Wayne Siberry. With Baynham also handling the majority of the vocal duties, they wrote and practiced daily, practically living in the studio for three months. Keyboardist John McGoldrick was added for touring purposes and they quickly established themselves as one of the hotter new heavy acts on the Ontario circuit, and it wasn't long before they were playing shows across the country – catching the attention of Epic Records execs along the way. They submitted a three-song demo tape to Epic Records and signed a deal in the spring of 1983.

Oshawa's Glen Johansen (Ronnie Hawkins, Eddy Grant, Nash the Slash, Martha & The Muffins and FM) was brought in to produce the album and the result was a keyboard-dominated metal sound with a thunderous backbeat and tight guitar solos and glossy edge. Recorded at Johansen's Toronto studio Integrated Sound, guest appearances on the LP included guitarist Stacy Heydon (Teenage Head, Iggy Pop, David Bowie) and Sheriff and Frozen Ghost's Arnold Lanni on synthesizers.

Saint

A saint is a person who is recognized as having an exceptional degree of holiness, or likeness to God. While the English term "saint" originated in Christianity, historians of religion now use the appellation "in a more general way to refer to the state of special holiness that many religions attribute to certain people," with the Jewish Tzadik, the Islamic Mu'min, the Hindu rishi or Sikh guru, and the Buddhist arhat or bodhisattva also being referred to as "saints". Depending on the religion, saints are recognized either by official ecclesiastical declaration/denomination or by popular acclamation (see folk saints).

In Christianity, "saint" has a wide variety of meanings, depending on the context and denomination. The original Christian denotation was any believer who is "in Christ" and in whom Christ dwells, whether in Heaven or on earth. In Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic doctrine, all of their faithful deceased in Heaven are considered to be saints, but some are considered worthy of greater honor, emulation, or veneration, with official ecclesiastical recognition given to some saints by canonization or glorification.

Saints is Destroy the Runner's debut album released through Solid State Records on September 12, 2006. It is also the only album to feature Kyle Setter as lead vocalist and Jeremiah Crespo as bassist.

Saints is a 2001 album of solo guitar recorded by Marc Ribot. It features several interpretations of compositions by Albert Ayler, as well as traditional spirituals, jazz standards, showtunes, and a song by The Beatles.

Reception

The Allmusic review by Alex Henderson states, "Ribot approaches avant-garde jazz in a very different way. Saints is full of discernible melodies; typically, Ribot will warmly embrace a melody before he ventures outside. And that inside/outside contrast serves him well throughout this excellent and very unpredictable CD".
