This project has been funded by a leading company in flow control products for oil and gas mid- / down-stream operations and the Royal Academy of Engineering. The overall goal is to develop a new technology for attaining a zero-spill to the environment during tanker breakout in a typical mid- or downstream operation involving low-viscosity refined petroleum products. The project will involve design and optimisation of analytical, numerical, computational and experimental processes for achieving the zero-spill technology.

The university’s high-performance computing (HPC) facilities will be used along with other computational resources to execute the project. The team of academics and industry partners of the project will work with the post holder to find solutions for the challenges of two-phase oil and gas flow in tubular systems to mitigate the risks of gas emissions and environmental pollutions.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are among the global health care challenges of the 21st century. The University of Aberdeen has a 100-year history of ground-breaking science in nutrition and health, principally led by researchers within the Rowett Institute (RI). The primary cause of obesity is the consumption of more food than the body requires, calories that are then stored as fat. An understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms regulating physical activity, energy expenditure and food intake is essential to successful prevention and treatment of obesity and associated conditions. The brain represents the master coordinator of voluntary physical activity and appetite, employing a number of interwoven neurological circuits to continually appraise and respond to changes in energy balance.
