The shear modulus of cemented soils at very small strain (G 0) was studied. For artificially cemented clay, G 0 was found to be independent of the mean effective stress until the yield stress. After yield, a significant effect of structure degradation on G 0 was observed. The experimental data were interpreted by an equation, which relates G 0 of cemented soils to mean stress, apparent overconsolidation ratio and the state of structure (sensitivity). The equation was also found to represent G 0 of cemented sands.

The treatment of soils with cement is an attractive technique when a project requires improvement of the local soil for the construction of subgrades for rail tracks, for roads, as a support layer for shallow foundations, and to prevent sand liquefaction. This paper advances understanding of the key parameters for the control of strength and stiffness of cemented soils by testing two soils with different gradings and quantifying the influence of porosity/cement ratio on both initial shear modulus (G0) and unconfined compressive strength (qu). It is shown that the porosity/cement ratio is an appropriate parameter to assess both the initial stiffness and the unconfined compressive strength of the soil–cement mixtures studied. Each soil matrix has a unique relationship for G0/qu against adjusted porosity/cement ratio, linking initial stiffness and strength.

The aim of the thesis is to critically examine whether it is methodologically possible to combine mathematical rigor – topology with a systematic dialectical methodology in Hegel, and if so, to provide as result of my interpretation the outline of Hegel’s Analysis Situs, also with the proposed models (build on the topological manifold, cobordism, topological data analysis, persistent homology, simplicial complexes and graph theory, to provide an indication of how the merger of Hegel’s dialectical logic and topology may be instrumental to a systematic logician and of how a systematic dialectical logic perspective may help mathematical model builders.
