A Quest for the Holy Grail: Tactile Precision, Natural Movement and Haptic Feedback In 3D Virtual Spaces2009 •
"Three-dimensional immersive spaces such as those provided by virtual worlds, give unparalleled opportunities for learners to practically engage with simulated authentic settings that may be too expensive or too dangerous to experience in the real world. The potential afforded by these environments is severely constrained by the use of a keyboard and mouse moving in two dimensions. While most technologies have evolved rapidly in the early 21st century, the mouse and keyboard as standard navigation and interaction tools have not. However, talented teams from a range of disciplines are on serious quests to address this limitation. Their Holy Grail is to develop ways to interact with 3D immersive spaces using more natural human movements with haptic feedback. Applications would include the training of surgeons and musical conductors, training elite sports people and even physical rehabilitation. This paper reports on the cutting-edge technology projects that look most likely to provide a solution for this complex problem, including the Wiimote and the Microsoft’s Project Natal."

Vibrotactile Feedback in Virtual Motor Learning: A Systematic Review2022 •
Vibrotactile feedback can be effectively applied to motor (physical) learning in virtual environments, as it can provide task-intrinsic and augmented feedback to users, assisting them in enhancing their motor performance. This review investigates current uses of vibrotactile feedback systems in motor learning applications built upon virtual environments by systematically synthesizing 24 peer-reviewed studies. We aim to understand: (1) the current state of the science of using real-time vibrotactile feedback in virtual environments for aiding the acquisition (or improvement) of motor skills, (2) the effectiveness of using vibrotactile feedback in such applications, and (3) research gaps and opportunities in current technology. We used the Sensing-Analysis-Assessment-Intervention framework to assess the scientific literature in our review. The review identifies several research gaps in current studies, as well as potential design considerations that can improve vibrotactile feedback systems in virtual motor learning applications, including the selection and placement of feedback devices and feedback designs.

The Vibrobyte is a wireless haptic interface specialized for co-located musical performance. The hardware is designed around the open source Arduino platform, with haptic con-trol data encapsulated in OSC messages, and OSC/hardware communications handled by Processing. The Vibrobyte was featured at the International Computer Music Conference 2008 (ICMC) in a telematic performance between ensem-bles in Belfast, Palo Alto (California, USA), and Troy (New York, USA). This paper will discuss the background and motivation for developing the Vibrobyte, technical details of the hardware and software, provide an overview of the first artistic applications during the ICMC performance, and describe future directions for research.
