POSSIBLE TRANSITION FROM SECONDRY SCHOOL TO HIGHER INSTITUTIONS A career presentation delivered at Governmen Girls Secondary School Minjibir and Government Junior Secondary School Wasai CO-EXIST all in Minjibir Local Government area of Kano State, using the approach of the Father of Guidance FRANK PARSON'S VOCATIONAL THEORY during a Third term Send-Forth anniversary of 2023 S.S. 3 and J.S.S. Candidates respectively. As Evidences of community sensitizations, outreach efforts and creation of general community awareness. Counsellor YAHAYA ADO WASAI (yahayaadowasai@gmail.com)08035580860 26th June, 2023 2.Introduction: ❑ If you are in senior secondary school right now, you are at a great point in your life. ❑ It is a good time to start thinking about your future. 9 ❑ Make some initial plans and keep in mind that plans can easily be changed. ❑ The decision you make at the end of your secondary school education is of utmost importance. It affects not only your further education and employment, but your life. ❑ Majority of science students are fond of selecting the popular career paths such as Medicine, Pharmacy and Engineering. ❑ While encouraging the youth to study hard and get accepted in their respective courses of interest, it is also important to enlighten them about the less popular career paths that offers abundant opportunities in the modern world. 3.What is a career? ❑ A career is the time and effort devoted to the pursuance of work in order to live a meaningful life. It include all the periods spent planning, acquiring education and series of jobs during a person’s life time. ❑ Career has also been defined as “the sum total of decisions that direct your educational, social, political and spiritual endeavours and reflect your unique personality characteristics and basic life values”. 4.Medicine and Pharmacy: ❑ Enjoyed great popularity due to their potentials of transforming individual lives ❑ Youths needs to be enlightened on high competition in these professions e.g. ▪ Admission requirements: 5 O’ Level credits in Math, English, Chemistry, Biology and Physics + the required UTME score. ▪ In the current year (2023) the minimum UTME requirement (weighted average score) in BUK and some other universities to study Medicine is 220 points. 10 ▪ However, because of the large number of applicants with weighted average score greater than 220, the admission quota is filled with students that had a score of 290 and above. Possible career choices for science students Medicine and Pharmacy: ❑ The “popular professions” have been expanded to equally “vibrant and lucrative” 5 Disciplines e. g Medical laboratory science, Dentistry and dental surgery, Optometry, Nutrition and dietetics, Anatomy and several other disciplines. ❑ In this presentation, the intention is not to discourage students from following their career of interest, but to expose them to the numerous options available. ❑ Therefore, a student can select his dream course of study in the UTME, however he should keep track of the institution’s minimum admission requirement. ❑ A student should be familiar with the available ways provided by the UTME board for change of university or programme Physical and Life Sciences 6 Challenges: ❑ One of the common problems faced by many of our youths today is the choice of an appropriate career path. ❑ Students are often carried away by “fancy” names in the choice of a course or institution. ❑ As a result, science students rarely consider courses in other faculties apart from Medicine and Engineering. ❑ However, there are a good number of faculties and departments that offer modern and attractive degree programs that are full of 11 prospects. ❑ Department of Chemistry ❑ Department of Physics ❑ Department of Biology ❑ Department of Mathematics 7.
