Syriac Sources in Comparison.” Read the abstract below. Back to Campus Calendar I will compare several sources to examine the construction of Romanitas in the late antique Syriac tradition. I will begin with excerpts from Aphrates and Ephrem, which illustrate the events involving Edessa and Nisibis in the 4th century CE with reference to the Roman emperors Constantine and Julian. We will then look at a passage from the Ecclesiastical History of John of Ephesus (6th century AD), preserved in the Chronicle of Zuqnin (8th century AD) and some evidence from the Acts of the Nestorian Synods (6th-7th century AD) to examine the economic and social aspects of trade in the Roman-Byzantine period during conflicts with Persia, and trade in the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea. Finally, the importance of the Syriac Martyrology (Acts of the Martyrs of Persia and the Martyrs of Najaran) as a valid historiographical source will be briefly illustrated. A brief presentation of the textual tradition of these works will also be given, to offer some methodological indications. Manage Events Calendar managers can login to crea and edit events.
