The king of Ficus species, Ficus benghalensis L. (Moraceae), or the banyan are large evergreen trees distributed throughout India, and also found in Bangladesh, Hawaii, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The species was first described in 1753 (ref. 4) with its specific epithet benghalensis denoting 'Bengal', the abode of the great banyan tree of Acharya Jagdish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, West Bengal, presently occupying 16,531 sq. m area and standing only on nearly 2900 prop roots after having lost its mother trunk, for which it is encrypted in the Guinness World Records.

Canopy Management of the Great Banyan Tree in Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, India2024 •
The present communication deals with the prop root training of Great Banyan Tree (GBT) of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden (AJCBIBG), Botanical Survey of India, Howrah. The GBT spans an area of 4.86 acres and features over 4400 aerial prop roots, covering a canopy circumference of 543 meters. Notably, the tree has survived three major cyclones, including the latest one, Amphan, on May 20, 2020, which significantly impacted a major portion of the tree. To address the damage caused by all cyclones and facilitate the expansion of the GBT, the AJCBIBG Authority is continuously working to train the prop roots for improving of canopy management using indigenous techniques developed by the staff over a decade for this age-old tree.
While landing in Netaji Subhas Bose International Airport one can get glimpse of greenery of Kolkata city and its surrounding areas. The city has quite a large number of trees on road, canal, jheel sides, boulevards, public parks and private gardens even on, garbage dumps by the side of EasternMetropoliton bye pass at Kadapara and nearParama island mainly planted for aesthetic and utility purposes .Ficus benghalensis was a common species of the city landscape in the early days. The tree was named as Banyan tree by English people because Hindu bania (merchants) used to assemble under the large canopy of this tree for business transactions. Similarly there were printing and publishing press under giant banyan trees of Shyam bazaar –Shovabazar area of North Kolkata, the publications from those presses were known as bat talar-punthi.The picture of Kolkata landscape of 1832 is given below(pic-1)
There are diverse varieties of plants and trees with humongous medicinal properties. Indian and other ancient civilization were leveraging these plants for curing and treating various diseases and ailments. One such tree with remarkable medicinal properties is the Ficus benghalensis, also known as Indian Banyan Tree. It has exceptional medicinal property which helped in curing various lifethreatening diseases. The ancient medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy were using this tree extensively to as medicine for various diseases. Various parts of these trees were used to cure many deadly diseases such as dysentery, diarrhea, diabetes leucorrhoea, menorrhagia, nervous disorders, tonic and astringent. The present review is therefore, an initiative to give a broad survey of the literature on its phytochemistry, pharamacognosy, traditional and pharmacological uses.
In Singapore, the Johor fig, Ficus kerkhovenii Koord. & Valeton (Moraceae), is a nationally critically endangered species whose large trees can now only be found in Changi, D'Leedon condominium, Pulau Ubin, Sentosa, and the Singapore Botanic Gardens' Jungle. It is an immense, magnificent tree well worth propagating and cultivating more extensively in Singapore, where it can be grown in parks, large gardens, and other sites to enhance the native biodiversity since it supports many insect and frugivorous bird species.
Ficus bengalensis (commonly known as a Banyan tree) is an evergreen tree and belongs to the family Moraceae. Ficus benghalensis is an important medicinal plant that has a number of bioactive compounds. The whole plant of Ficus bengalensis (leaves, fruits and bark) are used as anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-microbial properties and also used in the treatment of several diseases. From dangerous branches to urban banyan: Facilitating aerial root growth of Ficus rubiginosa2019 •
Large urban trees have many benefits. However, falling branches pose a serious hazard to both people and infrastructure. In several tree species, aerial roots grow down from branches to the ground. These roots are capable of thickening to support the branches, lessening the risk of tree failure. Unfortunately, in urban environments most aerial roots die before reaching the ground. Here, we report a new method for encouraging aerial roots to reach the ground, developed by the second-year botany class at UNSW Sydney. Our class tested three experimental treatments on aerial roots of Ficus rubiginosa Desf. ex Vent. (Port Jackson Fig)—PVC pipes filled with sphagnum moss, PVC pipes filled with potting mix, and PVC pipes filled with sphagnum moss and topped with funnels to catch extra rainwater. All three treatments significantly improved aerial root growth, with 26 of the 30 (87%) treatment roots reaching the ground after one year compared to 0 of the 10 control roots. Our method was succ...
