Abstract
We provide information on the typification of nine species names described by roberto de Visiani and josif Pančić in Plantae Serbicae Rariores aut Novae—Decas I, published in 1862. Seven lectotypes (Geum molle Vis. & Pančić, Potentilla lejocarpa Vis. & Pančić, P. visianii Pančić, Dianthus papillosus Vis. & Pančić, Goniolimon serbicum Vis., Euphorbia subhastata
Vis. & Pančić, Triticum petraeum Vis. & Pančić) and one epitype (Goniolimon serbicum Vis.) are designated here.
Key words: lectotypification, Pančić, de Visiani, Serbia, istituto Veneto di Scienze lettere ed arti
Introduction
This paper is the second of a series concerning the typification of the taxa published in the four works stemmed from
the collaboration of roberto de Visiani (1800–1878) with josif Pančić (1814–1888): Visiani (1860), Visiani & Pančić
(1862, 1865, 1870). an introduction on the two botanists and their work together can be found in Clementi & al.
(2014), where we typified the names published in the first of that series of publications, Visiani (1860).
the three works by Visiani & Pančić (1862, 1865, 1870) share a single introduction, that was published in the first
one (Decas i). it was written, on Pančić’s suggestion, by Visiani alone. therein, he first noted the lack of knowledge
about the Serbian flora at the time. He then listed a few publications on it and proceeded condemning the behaviour
of other botanists to publish their discoveries in obscure works with limited distribution in European libraries and
written “in any language” (quamvis lingua) other than Latin. He finished explaining how this series of works had to be
intended as supplements to Pančić (1856).
Decas i (Visiani & Pančić 1862) is sometimes wrongly considered as published in 1861 (e.g. iPni 2014, euro+Med
2014). the periodical in which it appeared (Memorie dell’imperial regio istituto Veneto di Scienze, lettere ed arti)
was a collection of papers on various subjects that were usually published as a single book at the end of an academic
year. The 10th volume, in which Visiani & Pančić (1862) was published, includes works presented from november
1861 to October 1862. Since the first articles in that issue were presented in 1861, the first pages of the book bear that
date, which has often led to the wrong conclusion that all the works therein were published in 1861. Visiani & Pančić’s
work was first presented to the Istituto, in Venice, on the 29th of May 1862 (imperial regio istituto Veneto di Scienze,
lettere ed arti 1862), which is confirmed also by the date printed at the end of the introduction to Visiani & Pančić
(1862), Visiani’s original manuscript and numerous letters by Pančić.
the aim of this paper is to provide typification of nine names validly published in Visiani & Pančić (1862), plus
one whose replaced synonym appears in that work, to guarantee the correct application of the names. a tenth name,
Eryngium serbicum Pančić (1856), also listed by Visiani & Pančić (1862), was already validly published and has
already been typified (Wörtz 2010), so it is not treated here.
