2025, A Commentary on the Ilias Latina (Oxford University Press, 2025)
** In Press; early 2025 ** Serious thinking about the Ilias Latina began in 2018, with a new entry for the Oxford Classical Dictionary, and a short piece on the catalogue of ships (subsequently published in Classical World, 2019). Serious work on the commentary itself began in 2019. The current edition includes introductory chapters, Latin text, English translation, and detailed line-by-line commentary. The translation is the first to appear in English in a major, mainstream press. It strives for a balance between accuracy and readability, and it endeavours to reproduce our poet’s epic flair without obscuring its repetitions in language and idiom. The commentary is also the first to appear in English. It is hoped that this edition will attract to the poem the sort of diverse readership, and at least some of the popularity, that it enjoyed in former times, especially during the medieval period and early middle ages. More generally, it is hoped that it will continue the recent trend of looking more charitably towards, and forming a more nuanced impression of, the curious Roman cultural phenomenon of ‘translation’.
The aesthetic changes in late Roman literature speak to the foundations of modern Western culture. The dawn of a modern way of being in the world, one that most Europeans and Americans would recognize as closely ancestral to their own, is to be found not in the distant antiquity of Greece nor in the golden age of a Roman empire that spanned the Mediterranean, but more fundamentally in the original and problematic fusion of Greco-Roman culture with a new and unexpected foreign element—the arrival of Christianity as an exclusive state religion. For a host of reasons, traditionalist scholarship has failed to give a full and positive account of the formal, aesthetic and religious transformations of ancient poetics in Late Antiquity. This book attempts to capture the excitement and vibrancy of the living ancient tradition reinventing itself in a new context in the hands of a series of great Latin writers mainly from the fourth and fifth centuries AD. A series of the most distinguished expert voices in later Latin poetry as well as some of the most exciting new scholars have been specially commissioned to write new papers for this volume.

An Anthology of Neo-Latin Poetry by Classical Scholars
An Anthology of Neo-Latin Poetry by Classical ScholarsAn Anthology of Neo-Latin Poetry by Classical Scholars, edited by William M. Barton, Stephen Harrison, Gesine Manuwald and Bobby Xinyue. Bloomsbury Academic: London, 2024.2024 •
Presenting a range of Neo-Latin poems written by distinguished classical scholars across Europe from c. 1490 to c. 1900, this anthology includes a selection of celebrated names in the history of scholarship. Individual chapters present the Neo-Latin poems alongside new English translations (usually the first) and accompanying introductions and commentaries that annotate these verses for a modern readership, and contextualise them within the careers of their authors and the history of classical scholarship in the Renaissance and early modern period. An appealing feature of Renaissance and early modern Latinity is the composition of fine Neo-Latin poetry by major classical scholars, and the interface between this creative work and their scholarly research. In some cases, the two are actually combined in the same work. In others, the creative composition and scholarship accompany each other along parallel tracks, when scholars are moved to write their own verse in the style of the subjects of their academic endeavours. In still further cases, early modern scholars produced fine Latin verse as a result of the act of translation, as they attempted to render ancient Greek poetry in a fitting poetic form for their contemporary readers of Latin.
