A systematic literature review approach was employed to identify and analyze existing literature on
AI-based project management. The study identifies the various applications of AI in project
management, explores the benefits and challenges of using AI in project management, and analyzes
the role of AI in improving project outcomes. The results suggest that AI has numerous applications in
project management, and its use can improve project performance. However, there are also several
challenges and limitations associated with the use of AI in project management, such as data security,
privacy concerns, and the potential for bias in decision-making. The study provides insights for
practitioners and researchers on the emerging trends in AI-based project management.
Keywords: artificial intelligence, project management
Introduction
The field of project management has undergone significant changes in recent years with the
introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related technologies. AI has the potential to
revolutionize the way projects are managed by providing powerful tools for analysis, decisionmaking, and automation. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the emerging trends
in AI-based project management. Specifically, the paper will explore the current state of AI-based
project management, examine the benefits and challenges of implementing AI in project management,
and identify the future directions of AI-based project management. Several authors have highlighted
the potential of AI in project management. For instance, Thomas and Müller (2018) argued that AI can
help project managers to analyze large amounts of data, identify patterns, and make more accurate
predictions. Similarly, Halverson and Stahl (2019) emphasized the role of AI in improving project
scheduling, risk management, and resource allocation. However, the adoption of AI in project
management is not without challenges. For example, Huemann, Keegan, and Turner (2018) pointed
out that the lack of trust in AI, the complexity of AI algorithms, and the need for specialized skills are
some of the barriers to the adoption of AI in project management.
Given the potential of AI in project management and the challenges that need to be addressed, it is
important to understand the emerging trends in AI-based project management. By providing a
comprehensive review of the literature, this paper aims to contribute to the knowledge base of AIbased project management and provide insights for practitioners and researchers.
Literature Review
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been defined as a computer-based technology that can mimic human
intelligence by learning from experience and performing tasks that typically require human
intelligence, such as problem-solving, decision-making, and language understanding (Russell &
Norvig, 2016). AI has numerous applications in project management, including project planning,
scheduling, risk management, and quality control. One of the main benefits of AI in project
management is its ability to automate repetitive tasks and make predictions based on historical data,
thus saving time and reducing costs (Bender et al., 2018). Additionally, AI can provide real-time data
analysis, enabling project managers to make informed decisions and adjust project plans accordingly
(Müller & Turner, 2019). However, there are also several challenges associated with the use of AI in
project management, such as data security, privacy concerns, and the potential for bias in decisionmaking (Davenport & Ronanki, 2018). Moreover, the use of AI in project management raises ethical

questions regarding the role of humans in decision-making and the potential impact on employment
(Brynjolfsson & Mitchell, 2017). Despite these challenges, there is a growing recognition of the
potential of AI to improve project outcomes. AI can enable project managers to optimize project
schedules, reduce costs, and improve project quality (Choi et al., 2018). Furthermore, AI can help
organizations to identify and mitigate risks before they become major issues (Wong et al., 2020).
Objectives
To identify the different applications of AI in project management.
To explore the benefits and challenges of using AI in project management.
To analyze the role of AI in improving project outcomes.
To provide a comprehensive review of the emerging trends in AI-based project management.
Research Methodology
A systematic literature review approach was employed in this study to identify and analyze existing
literature on AI-based project management. This approach involves a comprehensive and structured
search of published literature, followed by a critical appraisal and synthesis of relevant studies. The
systematic literature review approach was chosen because it provides a rigorous and transparent
methodology for evaluating a large body of literature.
Data Collection and Analysis Techniques
The data for this study is collected from secondary sources such as academic journals, research
papers, market. books, and reports. The data collected from the electronic databases were initially
screened based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The remaining articles were then subjected to a
detailed review of their abstracts and full texts. The data were then extracted and analyzed using a
thematic analysis approach, which involves the identification and categorization of key themes and
concepts from the literature. The analysis focused on identifying the benefits and challenges of using
AI in project management, as well as the role of AI in improving project outcomes.
Results and Analysis
Emerging Trends in AI-Based Project Management
AI has numerous applications in project management, including project planning, scheduling, risk
management, and quality control. One of the main benefits of AI in project management is its ability
to automate repetitive tasks and make predictions based on historical data, thus saving time and
reducing costs. Additionally, AI can provide real-time data analysis, enabling project managers to
make informed decisions and adjust project plans accordingly.
Applications of AI in Project Management
The study identified various AI applications in project management, including natural language
processing (NLP), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL). NLP enables machines to
interpret and respond to human language, making it useful for chatbots and virtual assistants in project
management. ML is used to build models that can predict project outcomes based on historical data,
while DL can analyze large datasets and identify patterns that are not visible to the human eye.
Impact of AI on Project Performance
The findings suggest that the use of AI in project management can improve project performance by
enabling project managers to optimize project schedules, reduce costs, and improve project quality.
Moreover, AI can help organizations to identify and mitigate risks before they become major issues.
For instance, predictive analytics can enable project managers to forecast project delays and identify
potential risks, allowing them to take preventive measures and reduce the impact of risks on project
outcomes.

Challenges and Limitations of AI-Based Project Management
Despite the potential benefits of AI in project management, there are also several challenges and
limitations associated with its use. These include data security, privacy concerns, and the potential for
bias in decision-making. Moreover, the use of AI in project management raises ethical questions
regarding the role of humans in decision-making and the potential impact on employment.
AI has the potential to transform project management by providing powerful tools for analysis,
decision-making, and automation. However, the benefits and challenges of using AI in project
management must be carefully considered, and ethical concerns must be addressed to ensure that the
use of AI is both responsible and effective.
Conclusion
AI has the potential to transform project management by providing powerful tools for analysis,
decision-making, and automation. However, the adoption of AI in project management must be
carefully considered, and ethical concerns must be addressed to ensure that the use of AI is both
responsible and effective.
Future research in this field could explore the development of AI-based project management
frameworks that incorporate ethical considerations and address the potential biases in AI decisionmaking. Furthermore, research could investigate the impact of AI on project team dynamics and the
role of project managers in managing AI-based project management processes. In conclusion, the use
of AI in project management has significant implications for project success, and organizations need
to carefully evaluate its potential benefits and limitations. By incorporating AI technologies into
project management processes in a responsible and effective manner, project managers and
organizations can enhance project outcomes and achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness.
