Christendom Standing Still2024 •
Smartphones and modern architecture enable and embody an endless supply of ersatz worlds with which to distract ourselves. We must resist the urge to flee from God into a multiverse of distractions, and learn to stand still in the presence of God.

In this essay I seek to explain Joseph's strange and erratic behavior towards his brothers when they come down to Egypt. I believe the key to unlocking Joseph' motivations is the fact that his identity was a secret not just from the brothers, but from all Egypt, and Joseph sought to protect that secret while still saving his family from starvation. I wrote this piece in the summer of 1990, while a student at Yeshivat Har Etzion just prior to starting college that fall. If would write this very differently today if I would write it at all. But I think the ideas still deserve consideration.

Eighteenth-Century Glass Beads from the English Slaving Fort at Bunce Island, Sierra Leone2007 •
While countless tons of European glass beads flowed into West Africa over the centuries, there is still relatively little information concerning what specific nations were importing over time. It was therefore of great interest to learn about two collections of beads surface collected at the site of a British slaving fort that operated on Bunce Island in the Sierra Leone estuary of coastal Sierra Leone from the late 17th to the early 19th century. Although it is impossible to assign the beads to a specific period in the fort's history, it is clear that they are of 18th-century origin and were part of the goods traded by the British. The present study describes the small but diverse collection of beads and places them in historical context.

This study aimed at enhancing the understanding of the effectiveness of vaccination strategies through employing of machine learning models to analyze childhood vaccination data in Malawi. It utilized the 2019-2020 Malawi Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) dataset with the focus on predicting the vaccination status of under 5 children in Malawi. The machine learning models employed by this study were, Logistic Regression, Random Forest Classifier, XG Boost Classifier, and Balanced Bagging Classifier (BBC). And the notable findings included an outstanding performance of the BBC in identifying fully vaccinated children, as indicated by its high recall rate of 0.8. However, the model had a low accuracy of 0.87 compared to the other model. The study further discovered the limitations of the applied models, for instance Logistic Regression and XG Boost had a tendency of overlooking fully vaccinated children due to their low recall rates. The research suggests future directions, including integrating more diverse variables, exploring advanced machine learning methods. The study’s findings provide a significant contribution to public health literature, particularly in optimizing childhood vaccination programs in Malawi and similar settings. This paper is an attempt to explore Folkloric material in Yasmina Khadra's What the Day Owes the Night, to reconsider folklore, not as a remnant of the past, but as an artistic vehicle to locate cultural belonging. It examines the different elements by which folklore shapes individual and collective identity in colonial Algerian literature. The novel of Yasmina Khadra represents material and spiritual folk constituents of the Algerian national and cultural identity during the French colonization, mainly the moral struggle of the protagonist between his Algerian cultural heritage and the French-acquired culture. The novel is rich in cultural, artistic, and folkloric elements of the Algerian individual and collective identity. It also exhibits the contrast between the local, and everyday French habits, causing a chasm between the two cultures the protagonist is struggling to bear and fill. This research indicates that the protagonist's internal conflict reflects the larger struggle that nearly all Algerians went through during French colonization by imposing the colonial culture on their own. Research findings demonstrate that folklore is a popular material that springs out from recurrent situations of everyday life. Khadra's What the Day Owes the Night expresses verbal art as academic parlance to encounter identity issues. Khadra effectively captures the essence of Algerian society and its diverse cultural fabric through vivid descriptions and storytelling, shedding light on the intricate nature of identity in a colonized nation.
