Platonisierende Strömungen2023 •
In late antiquity, the influence of Platonic philosophy extended far beyond the schools of the Platonists, in intellectual currents such as Hermeticism, Gnosticism, Jewish biblical exegesis (especially Philo of Alexandria, c. 20 BC - c. 45 AD), and Christian theology. These currents share features with late antique Platonism, such as the distinction between an intelligible and a sensible realm. It is unclear whether Plotinus had knowledge of Philo's work. We do not find direct references to Hermeticism or the Hermetic writings in Plotinus' work either, but there are some striking similarities with passages from these writings. Also missing from the Enneads are direct statements about Christianity and Christian positions. However, some passages have been interpreted as attacks on Christian teachings (as in Ennead III.6.6.72–77 concerning the resurrection of the soul with the body). Plotinus dealt however intensively with the Gnostics in the so-called Great Treatise, which consists of Enneads III.8, V.8, V.5 and II.9. However, it is the Ennead II.9 that clearly strikes the most polemical tone against the Gnostics.
Alfred North Whitehead was acknowledged by Deleuze to be ‘the last great Anglo-American philosopher before Wittgenstein’s disciples spread their misty confusion, sufficiency, and terror.’ He pointed out that for Whitehead: ‘Everything is Event, for the third time [after the Stoics and Leibniz], the cry reverberates with Whitehead: Everything is Event.’ Deleuze built on the event based ontology and Heraclitean process philosophy developed by Whitehead. However, it is only recently through the work of Isabelle Stengers that Deleuzians have become more fully aware of the importance of Whitehead in shaping Deleuze’s thought and the link that has now been established between their work. What happened to this ‘last great Anglo-American philosopher’ in analytic philosophy circles? He was the single person, I believe, whose work could and should have prevented that split which bedevils Western philosophy to this day: the great divide between analytic and continental philosophy. This is a catastrophic division that Michael Dummett famously stated has created such an impasse that ‘we have reached a point at which it’s as if we’re working in different subjects’. This paper is a draft of the one I will be presenting to The 12th annual Deleuze & Guattari Studies conference to be held at Royal Holloway, University of London Monday to Wednesday, 8-10 July 2019. Any comments are welcome.

Te Whānau Wiremu ki Aotearoa: How the Williams' story has shaped Christianity, Culture, and Nation in Aotearoa, New Zealand2023 •
As part of a more extensive work on a forthcoming biography of Henry Williams, this article sheds light on the Nonconformist roots of the Williams family. It offers reflections on their legacies in shaping Christianity, culture, and nation in New Zealand. It argues that Māori language, cultural knowledge, land, and people would not have survived the impacts of colonialism as they have done without the influence of the Williams family, their mission colleagues, and the early Māori church.
