A Beautiful and Sublime Existence By Dr. Edmond Melhem Sa´adeh did not pay much attention to issues related to the origin of the universe and the metaphysical world. Although he dealt in some of his writings with this subject in general, he was not interested in metaphysics as defined by Aristotle: the science of being as being (energia) - that which is beyond us, and the study of first principles and first causes. Aristotle’s definition came to be understood in various ways. It was taken to be: a) the science of the most general predicates of any being or entity whatsoever; b) the science of the primary entity or substance; c) the science of the most perfect being (or God); and d) the science of the “meaning” of “being”. His disinterest in this field was not because he lacked intellectual ability, but because he preferred to deal with important issues pertaining to the existence of humanity in general and to the life of his nation in particular. In other words, he did not want to delve into time-consuming issues that (a) have no benefits to life; (b) for thousands of years, philosophers have not been, and will probably not be, able to reach justifiable answers to them; and (c) they are beyond the immediate needs of his nation. Basically, Sa´adeh was concerned about the realities of existence, man and society. In Sa´adeh’s opinion, any existence, or being, outside nature means nothing. Its supposition is valueless and meaningless. Thus, he rejected any tendency or theory that turns to the beyond to explain things in existence through metaphysical sources. He wrote: We are not like those who direct their attention towards the metaphysical and pay no attention to issues of existence. We are not like those who direct their attention to the beyond existence. Rather, we are like those who aspire by their own nature to achieve a beautiful and sublime existence in this life and to ensure the continuity of this life as beautiful and sublime. Ibid., 107. Sublimity, according to Sa´adeh, is the essence of life and existence. Man should aim for a beautiful and sublime existence and a beautiful and sublime life. As he put it, “life and its beauty, goodness and loveliness, are the ultimate end”. Ibid., p. 173. This sublimity is not achieved outside existence, in the spiritual or metaphysical world, but within society, which “is a complete human existence and total human truth”. Antun Sa´adeh, Al-Aamal al-kamilah (Complete Works) (Beirut: SSNP Information Bureau, vol. 14, 1947), p. 89. It is achieved through continuous interaction between the group and its geographical environment and through the realization by the national community of its common interests, destiny and will and its unity of life. Within this context, the national group struggles for an improved, advanced and beautiful life.
