Rock Art Research in the Digital Era. Case Studies from the 20th International Rock Art Congress IFRAO 2018, Valcamonica (Italy). BAR Publishing. Archaeology of Prehistoric Art, 5, 2022
This paper focuses on different techniques of digital documentation, such as photogrammetry and laser scanning as well as subsequent analysis in a virtual environment of Native American (Ancestral Pueblo culture and historic Utes) rock art and Euro-American settlers “historical inscriptions” from the central Mesa Verde region, southwestern Colorado, USA. Special focus was put on the extracting elements invisible to the “naked-eye” by using high-resolution photo documentation and 3D digitization – via photogrammetry, Reflectance Transformation Imaging, and DStretch software. Also, we briefly discuss the potential benefits and disadvantages of using specific methods in field research, mainly in terms of photogrammetry, laser scanning, and RTI analysis. https://www.barpublishing.com/rock-art-research-in-the-digital-era.html

UNL Campus Archaeology is a team project led by faculty, students, and alumni focused upon the analysis and reassessment of historic collections from excavations carried out on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) campus, USA. The project is using 3D modeling techniques, non-rigid registrations of historical maps in GIS (Geographical Information Systems), and interactive online platforms to explore Lincoln's early urban development. The goal is to develop an interactive online portal for public outreach and education incorporating state of the art methods of recording cultural heritage. The case study for this presentation is a former domestic cistern that was excavated in 1997 during the expansion of the UNL Student Union. This diverse archaeological collection is in excellent condition, with a variety of artifacts, including glass bottles, faunal remains, and ceramics. The artifacts are representative of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Lincoln homes before the area was redeveloped by the university. This archaeological collection offers insight into the social structure, domestic life, and trade patterns at the turn of the century. The project utilizes 3D models and photographs of artifacts, historical maps, and archival databases, disseminated through an intuitive and interactive online portal emphasizing public accessibility in Scalar, and the Omeka-based online repository for hosting the database information. Scalar is designed for a broad audience, consists of a non-linear narrative, and incorporates a wide variety of media and data formats, including 3D models. Omeka provides the Dublin Core standardized solution for digital databases, allowing visitors to explore the data more in-depth. The project serves as an online portal for public outreach and education, making archaeology an integral part of Lincoln's early history and the broader Great Plains region.
Preservation Education and Research, 2019
Digital technology is transformative for preservation documentation projects and has the potential to expand research and teaching in diverse areas of the discipline. As its use grows, it is critical to understand how the scholarly community is deploying the various aspects of this technology. This article provides a snapshot of the state of digital documentation in historic preservation research and education in the twenty-first century and unpacks the programmatic and philosophical implications of these techniques for the field. It outlines the various deployments of digital documentation in historic preservation curricula through an intensive survey of NCPE-registered programs and highlights key areas of applied research where digital technology enhances interpretations and deliverables. The conclusion calls for a critical discussion of the principles of digital documentation in historic preservation. This discussion begins a dialogue about dynamic and flexible best practices in digital documentation deployment in research and education, as these technologies become more accessible to academic programs and preservation practitioners in the years ahead.

In this paper we theorize, visualize, and analyze the relation between physical places and their social media representations, and describe the characteristics of hyper-locality in social media. While the term " hyper-local " has been recently used to describe social media that is produced in particular locations and time periods , existing research has not raised important questions about representation and experience. How is the physical place performed through social media data? How do we experience locality via social media platforms? Our work combines quantitative and qualitative analysis , and employs perspectives from the fields of Digital Humanities and Art History that have yet to be used in social media research. We offer a theory of hyper-local social media, and theorize its manifestations and operations using a particular case study. We start by historicizing the hyper-local, drawing parallels between conceptualizations of " site-specific " art-works created in the 1970s and current organization of geo-temporal social media images. Next, we exemplify the hyper-local using the case study of the famous street artist Banksy's month-long residency in NYC during October 2013. We analyze and visualize 28,419 Insta-gram photos of these artworks to explore how these photos represent space and time specific events, as well as add new meanings to Banksy's original images. Finally , we offer a theoretical analysis, proposing what we see as some of the key characterizations of hyper-local social media data.
