“Cultural Legacy and Shared Musical Heritage: Past Present, and Future of a Musicological and Pedagogical Research Project for Teacher Training.” (Author: Pilar Barrios Manzano)2016 •
2014 •
The Essential Musical Selections for Cultural Learning is a songbook of select musical pieces from cultures around the world. The choices represent a standard canon of music from the regions of their origin. These common standards are well known to many generations of listeners and have come to symbolize multiple aspects of their cultures. The selections have been assembled by way of research, interviews, and my own personal experience as a musician immersed in performing global music traditions. This specific book serves as a sample for a more comprehensive future series entitled “10 Essentials: Music from World Traditions.” In this songbook, the reader will find sheet music and an explanation for each song. Accompanying each piece will be an audio file, description of music theory, and anecdotal reference to the history and cultural meaning of the musical selection. The songs are arranged in a way to be accessible to all levels of musicians as well as non-musicians. The transcriptions encompass the melodic elements and arrangements of the songs. However, they are not exact arrangements of the attached audio recordings. Rather the sheet music is meant to serve as a guide to learn the songs and melodies to fit any arrangement. Most importantly, these select musical pieces are meant to be a musical introduction to learn about different cultures. While some people rightfully consider it to be a universal language, music can also have specific meaning and symbolism serving as a reflection of people’s beliefs, emotions, and ideas. Even where language may stand as a barrier, music and songs can often serve as instruments of accessibility and cultural understanding. Of course, a musical selection claimed to be representative of a culture can be quite a subjective matter. Many people may agree or disagree with the selections made in this book. However, I ask the reader to view these selections as a beginning to what I hope will be an ongoing conversation about the importance of music to a culture and society at large. Additionally, I invite all suggestions and recommendations for significant musical selections to be included in future volumes of this songbook series. It is my sincere hope that the reader will gain as much insight about cultures and global musical traditions from these selections as I have over the years. These songs have served as conversation starters, prompted sing-alongs, and invoked tears, joy, and nostalgia for those who are familiar with their melodies and lyrics. I also hope they can help you, the reader and fellow global citizen, do the same in learning more about the world, each other, and oneself.

Musicking across Hemispheres: A Transatlantic Approach to Western Music History and Curricular Reform at a Hispanic Serving Institution2023 •
Advocates for music curricula reform call for programs of study that better address the concerns of professional musicians, engage the musical traditions of local communities, increase global awareness, and advance social justice. While global approaches to music history studies can address these goals, finding ways to broaden the scope of music history courses beyond the Western canon while also fulfilling curricular expectations that require knowledge of the canon is a challenge for many instructors. When considering how to expand courses to meet the goals above, I propose instructors prioritize the needs of the students and communities their institutions serve. In this article, I share my experience teaching music history at a large Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in the United States. I employ a transatlantic perspective to broaden the historical context in which the canonic repertoires of Western Europe developed and include a wider diversity of musical practices, all while highlighting content relevant to the backgrounds and aspirations of local students. This article presents examples from graduate and undergraduate courses initially designed to survey the music of Western Europe as part of a traditional conservatory-style curriculum. My recent iterations of these courses explore intersections of European musical traditions with music in the Western Hemisphere to advance the aforementioned goals of curricular reform in an environment where completely redesigning the music history sequence is not a practical option at present.

The Harmonious Classroom: Teaching Political Theory With Period Music2023 •
The study of political theory is particularly well suited to pedagogical practices that involve music. Several canonical figures were themselves composers and instrumentalists who cared deeply about their musical commitments. For a notable few, including Plato, Aristotle, and Rousseau, music arguably constitutes an indispensable feature of their respective ideas about politics and the social order. Yet even when music is less central to a thinker's written work, it remains a useful tool for illustrating historical context and providing a richer understanding of shifting cultural currents. This article explores several considerations that will aid in the selection of music as a way of promoting conceptual clarification and contextual elucidation. While the overwhelming focus on music in the classroom has relied upon contemporary popular music, I prioritize the use of period music, which avoids some potential challenges. The article includes a musical connection rubric intended to help in the selection of music that will prove most effective as a pedagogical tool.

Teaching Music In School And Music History: Possibilities Of Integration2023 •
This essay discusses the possibility of incorporating aspects of classical music and music history into basic education. It presents elements of the lives and works of two composers from the classical music tradition, Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven, bridging them with everyday life and proposing their integration into pedagogical-musical work. In this regard, biographical and compositional aspects of both composers are mentioned, whose historical and musicological importance can contribute to the development of music education in basic education. It also reports on a workshop aimed at teacher training, offered to teachers from the Municipal Education Network of Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul), in which activities were developed, starting from Bach and Beethoven, with the purpose of uniting classical music and music history in pedagogical plans within school settings. As a result, it was observed that there are many possibilities for introducing biographical elements of composers, which can enhance and underpin the teaching and learning of music in schools.
