The ECX Project, Brookhaven Lab's predecessor to the RHIC e-Cooler, includes a prototype RF tuner mechanism capable of both coarse and fast tuning. This tuner concept, adapted originally from a DESY design, has longer stroke and significantly higher loads attributable to the very stiff ECX cavity shape. Structural design, kinematics, controls, thermal and RF issues are discussed and certain improvements

Superconducting RF cavity developments are currently on-going for new accelerator projects at CERN such as HIE ISOLDE and HL-LHC. Mechanical RF tuning systems are required to compensate cavity frequency shifts of the cavities due to temperature, mechanical, pressure and RF effects on the cavity geometry. A rich history and experience is available for such mechanical tuners developed for existing RF cavities. Design constraints in the context of HIE ISOLDE and HL-LHC such as required resolution, space limitation, reliability and maintainability have led to new concepts in the tuning mechanisms. This paper will discuss such new approaches, their performances and planned developments.

A 56 MHz Superconducting RF Cavity operating at 4.4K is being constructed for the RHIC collider. This cavity is a quarter wave resonator with beam transmission along the centerline. This cavity will increase collision luminosity by providing a large longitudinal bucket for stored bunches of RHIC ion beam. The major components of this assembly are the niobium cavity with the mechanical tuner, its titanium helium vessel and vacuum cryostat, the support system, and the ports for HOM and fundamental dampers. The cavity and its helium vessel must meet equivalent safety with the ASME pressure vessel code and it must not be sensitive to frequency shift due to pressure fluctuations from the helium supply system. Frequency tuning achieved by a two stage mechanical tuner is required to meet performance parameters. This tuner mechanism pushes and pulls the tuning plate in the gap of niobium cavity. The tuner mechanism has two separate drive systems to provide both coarse and fine tuning capabi...

A folded coaxial tuner without spring fingers was designed for the Low Energy RHIC electron Cooler (LEReC) 2.1 GHz warm cavity. During RHIC run 2019, this tuner was found to cause cavity trips via different failure modes. After analyzing these failure modes, a new straight coaxial tuner without spring fingers was proposed and was installed. We show the operational experience of the new tuner in this paper.

The ESS Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) is a 4vane resonant cavity designed at the frequency of 352.21 MHz frequency. It must accelerate and bunch a 70 mA proton beams from 75 keV to 3.62 Mev of energy with a 4% duty cycle. The current 3D design evolved and is currently divided in 5 segments for a total length of 4.54 m. This paper presents a complete radiofrequency (RF) analysis using the ANSYS Multiphysics 3D RF simulating code HFSS and a RFQ 4-wire transmission line model (TLM). It describes the integrated cooling strategy based on a coupling between the RF power losses and the thermomechanical physics in order to allow a proper RFQ tuning once under operation.

SRF cavities for particle acceleration are conventionally operated immersed in a bath of liquid helium at 4.2 K and below. Although this cooling configuration is practically and economically viable for large scientific accelerator installations, it may not be so for smaller accelerators intended for industrial applications such as the treatment of wastewater, sludge, flue gases, etc. In this paper, we describe a procedure to operate SRF cavities without liquid helium that can be used to construct electron-beam sources for industrial applications of electron irradiation (1-10 MeV electron energy). In this procedure, an elliptical single-cell 650 MHz niobium-tin coated niobium cavity is coupled to a closed-cycle 4 K cryocooler using high purity aluminum thermal links. The cryocooler conductively extracts heat (RF dissipation) from the cavity without requiring liquid helium around the cavity. We present construction details of this cryocooler conduction-cooling technique and systematic...

A 56 MHz Superconducting RF Storage Cavity is being constructed for the RHIC collider. This cavity is a quarter wave resonator that will be operated in a liquid helium bath at 4.4 K. The cavity requires an extremely quiet environment to maintain its operating frequency. The cavity, besides being engineered for a mechanically quiet system, also requires a quiet cryogenic
The CEBAF accelerator, a recirculating CW electron accelerator that is currently operating at Jefferson Laboratory, is in the process of having 10 new cryomodules installed to allow for the maximum beam energy to be increased from 6 GeV to 12 GeV. This upgrade required the fabrication, processing and RF qualification of 80, seven cell elliptical SRF cavities, a process that was completed in February 2012. The RF performance achieve in the vertical testing dewars has exceeded the design specification by â25% and is a testament to the cavity design and processing cycle that has been implemented. This paper will provide a summary of the cavity RF performance in the vertical tests, as well as review the overall cavity processing cycle and duration for the project.

A 56 MHz superconducting RF cavity has been designed, fabricated and installed in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The cavity operates at 4.4 K with a “quiet helium source” to isolate the cavity from environmental acoustic noise. The cavity is a beam driven quarter wave resonator. It is detuned and damped during injection and acceleration cycles and is brought to operation only at store energy. For a first test operation, the cavity voltage was stabilized at 300 kV with full beam current. Within both Au + Au and asymmetrical Au + He3 collisions, luminosity improvement was detected from direct measurement, and the hourglass effect was reduced. One higher order mode (HOM) coupler was installed on the cavity. We report in this paper on our measurement of a broadband HOM spectrum excited by the Au beam.

There is a growing interest in using rf transverse deflecting structures for a plethora of applications in the current and future high performance colliders. In this paper, we present the results of a proof of principle (PoP) superconducting rf dipole, designed as a prototype for a 750 MHz crabbing corrector for the Medium Energy Electron-Ion Collider (MEIC), which has been successfully tested at 4.2 K and 2 K at the Jefferson Lab’s Vertical Testing Area (VTA). The analysis of its rf performance during cryogenic testing, along with Helium pressure sensitivity, Lorentz detuning, surface resistance, and multipacting processing analysis are presented in this work. Detailed calculations of losses at the port flanges are included for completeness of the cavity’s cryogenic performance studies.
