In Beyond Resistance: The Future of Freedom, Robert Fletcher, ed. New York: Nova Science Publishers, 2007
A plan for research on resistance within the processes of everyday life is discussed in this paper. Discussion on the complexity of the research is followed by a self-reflexive discussion of the author’s motivation and relationship to the project. Following is an explanation of how the work of Michel de Certeau, who was the leading theorist on the subject, guides thinking on resistance tactics. A brief statement of training and experience as it relates to executing the project precedes a theoretical perspective on the research field and participants’ levels of social consciousness. Plans for arts based research that will function simultaneously as educational and liberating processes are followed by an overview of the transdisciplinary characteristics of the project; a statement of affirmation concludes the paper.
Abstract: In a world of oppressive, hegemonic power structures, there are varying forms of clandestine defiance that emerge by the oppressed. In his influential book, Weapons of the Weak, James C. Scott explains the phenomena, “everyday forms of resistance”, that lies between the two poles of collective opposition and absolute submission. This paper will throw light on the nature of everyday resistance- acts that often go unnoticed and are at times ignored by authority, acts that are persistently practised in the everyday and within a temporal context, and acts that might never be confrontational or dramatic yet are sites for subverting particular ideologies. Oblique forms of expression include music in Bangladesh and street art in Palestine. Going further, the authors then locate certain specific gendered subaltern practices of urban LGBT communities within Scott‟s concept.
