“The Comfort of Everyday Existence”, or On Religious Practices in the 14th Century France. The article discusses the possibilities and prospects of studying medieval sources from the point of view of the history of everyday life. Drawing on Book of the Knight of the Tower, a 14th century didactic collection of stories that covers a variety of subjects from the Bible to the author’s own life, Yulia Krylova analyses changing attitudes towards religious practices in 14th century France, as the writer of this didactic treatise saw them. The author of the Book did not specifically focus the readers’ attention on the everyday background of his stories, but he did it unwittingly, complaining about the decline of his contemporaries’ morals. He drew information about the past from books as well as from the memories of his father and grandmother to show that convenience and the comfort of everyday life came valued higher by his contemporaries than the duty to perform all religious rites.
