The natural radioactivity of K40, Th232and Ra226 in rocks and soils samples collected around Aurangabad-Maharashtra in India. The concentration of radionuclide in samples were determined by gamma-ray spectrometer NaI(Tl) detector. The aim of the present work is to measure the levels of natural radioactivity in the selected samples. In addition to this radiological hazard assessment due to natural radionuclide carried out and the average activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K were determined. The Radium equivalent, air absorbed gamma radiation dose rate and external radiation hazard index and the annual effective radiation dose were calculated in this study.

This study is intended to assess activity of the natural radionuclide in natural soil and rock in study area and to estimate the radiological parameters such as radium equivalent activity, external hazard index and absorbed dose rate, which are related to the external γ-dose rate to assess the radiological hazards to human health and for checking its quality in general and knowing its effect on the environment. The measured activity concentrations for these natural radionuclides were compared with the reported data for other countries. The data obtained are essential for development of standards and guidelines concerning the use and management of soil and rock materials for construction of building and other purposes. In the present study, measurement of activity concentration of natural radionuclides 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K in natural soil samples by using the method gamma ray spectrometry method, in some locations of Chamarajanagar district, in Karnataka state India, were made. The activity concentrations of radionuclides in the soil samples of the study area varied in the range from 4.85-14.15Bqkg-1 , 21.59-47.27Bqkg-1 , 19.87-47.79Bqkg-1 , respectively for 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K. Annual effective dose due to gamma radiation emitted by 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K present in soil varies from 2.44-5.86μSvy-1 .

The level of natural radioactivity in some soil and rock samples collected from different locations of Aurangabad, Maharashtra-India were measured. Concentrations of radionuclides in soil and rock samples were determined by gamma-ray spectrometer using HPGe detector (High Purity Germanium) detector based, low background gamma-ray counting system with specially designed shield. The mean activity level of the natural radionuclides 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K is 5.673 ± 0.325, 9.163 ± 0.525 and 168.25±5.8 Bq kg-1 , respectively. These values are lower than the world average concentrations 35, 30 and 400 Bq kg-1 for 226 Ra , 232 Th and 40 K, respectively (UNSCEAR, 2000). From the measured specific radio activities of the above three natural radionuclides, the radium equivalent activity, the absorbed dose rate, the annual effective dose, the external hazard index, the internal hazard index, the gamma index and alpha index were calculated. The mean values obtained are, 31.874Bq kg-1 , 15.171nGy h-1 , 0.019mSv y-1 , 0.086, 0.101, 0.242 and 0.028 for radium equivalent activity (Ra eq), absorbed dose rates (D), annual effective dose rates (E ff Dose), external hazard index (H ex), internal hazard index (H in), gamma index(I γ) and alpha index (I α) respectively. All the health hazard indices are well below their recommended limits. This indicated that the study area was radiologically safe for human being. This research work recommends further studies to estimate internal and external doses from other suspected radiological sources to the population in Aurangabad, Maharashtra-India.

Naturally occurring radioactive materials are widely spread in the earth's environment, being distributed in soil, rocks, water, air, plants and even within the human body. All of these sources have contributed to an increase in the levels of environmental radioactivity and population radiation doses. This paper presents the activity level due to the presence of 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K in soil samples of Naushera area in Rajouri District. The measured activity of 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K in collected soil samples ofNausheraregion was found to vary from 13±10 to 55±10 Bq kg-1 , 14±9 to 101±13 Bq kg-1 and 150±81 to 1310±154 Bq kg-1 , respectively. The radium equivalent activity in collected soil samples was found to vary from 47 to 211 Bq kg-1. The total absorbed gamma dose rate in this area was found to vary from 22 to 93 nGyh-1. The distribution of these radionuclides in the soil of study area is discussed in details.

The activity concentrations of natural radionuclides (226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K) in the soil samples collected from different area of Aurangabad, India were determined by gamma ray spectroscopy using a well calibrated NaI (Tl) detector system. The range of activity concentrations of (226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K) were found to be (4.169 to 12.862, 8.658 to 21.316 and 40.088 to 130.87) Bq.kg-1 respectively. With an average value of 8.178, 17.408 and 96.496 Bq.kg-1 respectively, which are low when compared with worldwide average of 35, 30 and 400 Bq.kg-1 . The radium equivalent activity concentration was found in the range from 29.379 to 50.638 Bqkg-1 , the absorbed dose rate was found to be in the range from 13.640 to 22.825 nGyh-1 with an average value of 18.317 nGyh-1 , and the outdoor annual effective dose was found to vary from 0.017 to 0.027 mSvy-1 , which is below the safety limit of 1 mSv.y-1 as recommended by International Commission on Radiological Protection .Also, the internal and external hazard indices and gamma index were found to be less than unity, therefore the soil samples exhibit radiation well within the permissible limit and thus are safe.

Background: Natural radionuclides in rock samples, primarily 238 U (uranium), 232 Th (thorium) and 40 K (potassium), are the main source of radia on exposure to workers and general public and their measurement is of paramount importance from radia on protec on point of view. Materials and Methods: Gamma spectrometry using HPGe detector was used to measure the radioac vity and assess the radiological hazards and annual effec ve dose. The data is sta s cally significant. Results: In the studied rock samples, the mean ac vity of 238 U, 232 Th, 40 K is 12.15 ± 1.68 Bq/kg, 45.17 ± 6.92 Bq/kg and 639.24 ± 115.86 Bq/kg, respec vely. The mean values of radium equivalent ac vity, radiological hazards external hazard index (Hex), Internal hazard index (Hin), Gamma index (Iγ) and Alpha index (Iα) are 125.96 ± 14.94 Bq/kg, 0.34 ± 0.04, 0.37 ± 0.04, 0.48 ± 0.06 and 0.06 ± 0.00 respec vely.
