A traditional drawing of the tree of life emphasizes the eukaryota. Classical biology has largely been the study of somatic tissue in multi-cellular eukaryotes. Yet the eukaryotes represent a highly specialized and highly constrained form of life. Attempts to understand biological dark matter -- the invisible prokaryotic realm -- by generalizing from studies on eukaryota cannot succeed. As metagenomic tools allow the study of the prokaryotic realm, we are discovering this truly is a microbial planet. The macroscopic organisms -- the subject of classical biology -- are just lumps in the microbial soup.

In 1988, Andrzej Niwiski counted 44 Egyptian yellow coffins or fragments dating 21st and 22nd dynasties in French collections. Then, in 1997, René van Walsem added to the inventory four new coffins of stola type, i.e. coffins with red mummy braces crossing on the chest. In the present corpus, the total number was increased to 87; two of these coffins were abroad in 1988. In addition, six non-localized coffins (Niw 208, 427, 428, 450, 455 and 457) were identified, two coffins were identified (Niw 331 and 332) and the five sets from Bab el-Gasus offered to France in 1893 are located. This study therefore provides an updated list of 21st and 22nd dynasties yellow coffins in French collections and aims at clarifying the provenance of some coffins.

Lighting up life: fluorescent proteins and optogenetic sensors Fluorescent proteins of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) family have given birth to a vast array of targetable optical sensors that play a major role in the deciphering of live cell chemistry. These genetically encoded reporters benefit from unequaled specificity and integration into the cellular machinery, while they gather withing less than 100 Å the three essential functions of a nanosensor, namely functionalization, chemical detection, and optical conversion. Their numerous applications and their performances directly stem from the photodynamics and photochemistry of the chromophore carried by GFPs. Owing to mutagenesis, spectroscopy and modeling tools, the way in which the GFP structural and conformationnal characteristics modulate their optical properties is better understood today. This mechanistic view will become ever more essential in the rational engineering of new probes for bioimaging.
