The bryozoan Amathia verticillata (delle Chiaje, 1822) fouling harbours of the southeast coast of India: re-evaluating its statusAn account of the Ostracoda morphometric measurement from the epi to bathypelagic zone of offshore Visakhapatnam and thereafter, the impact of paleoenvironmental changes are discussed. Traditional morphometry was done in carapace of , sp., sp., and sp. Antero-posterior length and dorso-ventral height (dimensions) have been marked, measured and analysed for these dominant species. Different species exhibit shape variations with respect to bathymetry. Relative warp analysis reveals that Ostracoda can also thrive on deep waters by adapting the shells to environmental necessities. The results show that shallow dwelling species having greater dorso-ventral readings, than deep water forms. Observed antero-posterior length and dorso-ventral height ratio is 3:1 for deep water sp., but for shallow water forms the ratio is 2:1. However, the deep water taxa sp. exhibits a thicker shell by accumulating maximum calcium percentage in the shell, which is absent in shallow water sp. and this clarifies that different species of Ostracoda reacts differently to environmental changes for survival. Valve area, valve perimeter, shell thickness, roundness and elongation of Ostracoda valves vary with respect to the habitat of the species. The valve area of the carapace decreases in the agitated environment and cool water temperatures. Species with well-developed ornamentation maintain a thicker shell.

Revealing morphological characteristics of Goniodorididae genera (Mollusca: Nudibranchia)2021 •
Detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the species is an essential element in taxonomic studies, since it allows the comparison and differentiation of separate groups of taxa. It becomes especially important when considering type species, as the subsequent identification of the species that compose the taxa is based on its characteristics, considered common in the group. However, despite its relevance, there are still numerous species without detailed descriptions, being especially significant among invertebrates. The family Goniodorididae is a little-known group of nudibranchs that includes eight recognized genera:Okenia,Goniodoris,Ancula,Lophodoris,Spahria,Trapania,GoniodoridellaandMurphydoris. Several of their species are not completely described, including type species, and the systematics of the family is still unclear. Here we study in detail the external morphology and internal anatomy of the type species of five of the eight Goniodorididae genera using microcomputed tomography...

Drawing Lots: from Egalitarianism to Democracy in Ancient Greece
Irad Malkin and Josine Blok, Drawing Lots: from Egalitarianism to Democracy in Ancient Greece. Oxford University Press 2024.2024 •
Advance praise “There’s much talk in western democracies about possible uses of the lot—the random allocation of civic resources and of political offices in the interests of equality and justice. In this prodigiously researched monograph, two historians track back to a culture and a political model in which the lot came to be seen as central and fundamental to the world’s first democratic regimes. Politicians of today, please note—and act.” Paul Cartlege, University of Cambridge “This book provides new perspectives on the uses of the lot from the time of Homer to the Hellenistic period. Malkin and Blok show that the Greeks used the lot for a wide range of practices, from the distribution of war booty to divination. They argue that the lot epitomizes the ancient Greeks’ preference for practices that were fair and equitable. Drawing lots thus gains a new significance—and a timely one, given today’s interest in randomly selected citizen assemblies to bring a new policy into effect.” Sara Forsdyke, University of Michigan “Drawing lots was one of the foundations of ancient Greek civic egalitarianism. This book is the first comprehensive survey of the practice. Yet it is more than just that: as well as explaining every detail of Greek sortition and the beliefs behind it, the authors also show just how much modern democracy might be improved by borrowing from this ancient system. This is ancient history at its most relevant.” Ian Morris, Stanford University “An extraordinary piece of scholarship, this landmark book on the use of lottery in Ancient Greece reshuffles our understanding of the origins of democracy—and injects brilliant insights from the past into today’s debate on political innovation. Drawing Lots is an incredible tour de force—and an intellectual feast throughout.” David Van Reybrouck, author of Against Elections: The Case for Democracy Irad Malkin, Josine Blok, Drawing Lots: From Egalitarianism to Democracy in Ancient Greece (Oxford University Press) This book offers the first comprehensive study of drawing lots as a central institution of ancient Greek society. It reveals how an egalitarian mindset guided selection, procedure, and distribution by lot and how, after three centuries of practice, drawing lots was introduced for governance, a Greek innovation that is relevant today. The first two parts (Irad Malkin) explore the egalitarian mindset geared towards horizontal social relationships, expressed in using the lot instead of a top-down vision of authority and sovereignty. Drawing lots presupposes equality among participants deserving equal "portions" (a major concept) and was used for distributing land, inheritance, booty, sacrificial meat, selecting individuals, setting turns, mixing and integrating groups, and divining the will of the gods. It was a self-evident method broadly applied. Drawing lots would crystallize, exclusively, community boundaries and emphasize its sovereignty. The guiding values were equality and fairness. Aside from divination by lot, the gods (who also draw lots for their realms) are the guardians of the fair and just procedure of drawing lots, but they do not predetermine the outcome. The third part, written by Josine Blok, investigates the transposition of the drawing of lots to the governance of the polis. The implied egalitarianism often conflicted with a top-down perception of society and the values of inequality, status, and merit. Drawing lots was introduced into oligarchies and democracies at an uneven pace and scale. The classical Athenian democracy, an eye-catching case both in antiquity and today, was exceptional. A conclusion (Malkin) and an envoi (Blok) about the meaning of the Greek examples for drawing lots today close the book together with an appendix (Elena Iaffe) surveying the Greek vocabulary of drawing lots (with the complimentary database kleros.org.il).

Abstract: There have been drastic changes in the organizational structures and way of doing business in almost every field in the digital age we live in. It is obvious that educational sector cannot stay unresponsive to these developments ad miss the opportunities they provide. As such, technology assisted practices that were initiated as distance education in the past have evolved into and becoming widespread in models like e-learning, open educational resources, massive open online courses, mobile learning micro-learning. The idea that education is not confined to the limitations of the school borders and that education can happen anywhere and anytime is now widely accepted. Nevertheless, it cannot be presumably argued that higher education institutions are in a substantial transformation to fully benefit from the opportunities enabled by Information Communication Technologies. While investing in technological infrastructure and hardware in large amounts, higher education institutions seem to be reluctant to change their traditional structures and educational processes. Though there is a common declaration for a call for change, it can be observed that there is not much that changes. In this workshop, factors that force higher education to transform are discussed and in line with these factors, the developments expected of these institutions are identified in the light of above mentioned observations and ideas.

Local perspectives on heritage reconstruction after conflict: a public opinion survey of Aleppo2024 •
The destruction of heritage in conflict has emerged as a key challenge to global security and the prospects of peace. In response, the international community has undertaken several large-scale heritage reconstruction projects on the assumption that they would foster development and promote cohesion. However, to date very little is understood about how local populations value their heritage, how they perceive its destruction, whether they view reconstruction as a priority, and the extent to which they support foreign efforts to rebuild. This article addresses this lacuna by focusing on the case study of Aleppo and documenting the results of an original public opinion survey of 1600 residents. The results hold several implications for heritage projects in Aleppo, namely that locals prefer that heritage reconstruction: not be privileged over security, development and peace; includes the rebuilding of their local religious sites as much as significant non-religious sites; transforms sites into more useful structures for the community; and they want domestic control and agency over the future of their heritage. The article concludes by noting that such findings hold important implications for heritage projects in other (post-)conflict contexts where mass heritage destruction has taken place.
