The paper looks into the characteristics of teenage discourse based on the main characters of two authors, British and American, who work in the field of bibliotherapy (the fictional text provides healing by means of reading; that is, inspiring young people to overcome difficulties). We examine the genre and stylistic features of a teenage discourse, such as lexical, semantic, phonetic and graphic characteristics of the rural British English, the Northern English dialect depicted in the language of a male teenager in THE TRUE TALE OF THE MONSTER BILLY DEAN by David Almond. In this novel the thematic component is represented by the following recurrent concepts or frames: EDUCATION, NATURE OF THE "SELF", COMING OF AGE, ADAPTATION TO CHANGE, RELATIONS BETWEEN OPPOSITES (LIFE AND DEATH, PAST AND FUTURE, REALITY AND FICTION). The expressive lexis, for example, metaphors, teenage slang and collo-quialisms, illustrate youth in crisis and the challenges of growing up. The other novel we analyze is CHASING REDBIRD by Sharon Creech; here we examine the discourse features of a female teenager, including the thematic components of Themes such as FAMILY, OVERCOMING DEPRESSION, and TEENAGE ROMANCE. The analysis of the conversations of fictional characters created by British and American authors is used to build generalizations about the characteristics of language and style of teenagers. The stylistic and genre components highlight the colloquial style used to depict the personal life of a male and female teenagers , who confront the evils of society, including corruption, unkindness, and family issues.

The paper discusses lexical, semantic, phonetic and graphic features of the rural British English, the Northern English dialect. The features serve as stylistic and genre markers of teenage speech genre; that is, the elements of colloquial style depict the inner world of a male teenager, who faces the evils of the contemporary society like corruption, unkindness, and family problems. The discourse features, including expressive lexis like slang and colloquialisms, describe children in crisis, aspects of growing up and troubles of a teenager. The novel has recurring themes – education, nature of the "self", coming of age, adaptation to change, relations between opposites (life and death, past and future, reality and fiction). The novel represents bibliotherapy – the text is used for healing through reading. It motivates young generation to overcome difficulties. Key words: colloquial style, speech genre, functional style, stylistics, discourse, discourse analysis, dialect, phonetics, semantics, lexis, slang, teenager
THEMATIC CHARACTERISTICS IN THE COLLOQUIAL STYLE OF TEENAGE DISCOURSE Penkov Boris Victor PhD Plekhanov University, Moscow, Russia Abstract: The paper discusses the thematic features of discourse. The study is based on the analysis of a literary work and the character a thirteen year old girl, the first-person teller of CHASING REDBIRD by Sharon Creech. The thematic characteristics point out the style and genre of teenagers. The societal dimension of the discourse demonstrates the void of a common self-image for the Taylor family members and leadership crisis; the community fails to take care of their own family, which may lead to manipulation and abuse of the prospective victim by others. The Themes FAMILY, OVERCOMING DEPRESSION, and TEENAGE ROMANCE are used to portray the world of a female teenager and to conceptualize the related ideas. Key words: colloquial style, speech genre, functional style, stylistics, discourse, discourse analysis, semantics, teenage discourse

Translation of Stylistic Devices in Contemporary Young Adolescent FictionGeneral interest in teenage books has been upsurging because of films based on international best-sellers. Therefore, the scripture becomes a source of language, in a sense that youngsters learn new words, phrases, allusions or metaphors and incorporate them in their everyday language. Demand for popular reads requires a quick reaction translating these books as there are plenty of novels for young adults written in foreign languages. However, translation of adolescent fiction is a challenging task due to the use of slang and other colloquial vocabulary or stylistic devices. However, the translation of stylistic devices as such has not been researched since linguists focus on teen slang. The translation of stylistic devices is an interesting issue to deal with as the entire translation “eco-system” is observed not from one sentence or paragraph perspective. The research deals with stylistic devices and their translation and the analysis of translation. It also presents stylistic dev...

Drawing from interdisciplinary scholarship that re-conceptualizes adolescence as a cultural construct, this article introduces a Youth Lens. Focused specifically on its application to young adult literature, agenre of writing that explicitly names it audience, this article explores howa Youth Lens provides a much needed critical approach to interpreting and teaching young adult literature within literacy education, especially given the problematic representations of youth in many of these literary texts. Specifically, this article a) discusses the central assumptions thatgovern a Youth Lens; b) provides an explanation of the lens, including published and new examples and guiding questions; c) presents an in-depthcase of how a Youth Lens illuminates new possibilities for understanding The Hunger Games; and, d) offers specific implications aYouth Lens has for the analysis of young adult and other literary texts, approaches to teaching young adult literature courses for pre-service literacy teachers, and secondary literacy pedagogy involving young adult literature and media texts.
The Pragmatics of Personal Pronouns
Pronouns and sociospatial ordering in conversation and fiction2015 •
As a result of the growing interest in fiction by recent sociolinguistic research, in this Special Issue, eight sociolinguistic studies on different aspects of fiction have been collected, arguing for the emergence of a new field of study, which I call “sociolinguistics of fiction”. Fiction (e.g. film, TV series, advertising, literature, music) is treated as a broad range of discursive resources and spaces, which is undoubtedly differentiated in the semiotic modes used (e.g. visuals, music), but which is also unified by the fact that it involves the portrayal of events and people in an imaginary setting. Besides, being identified as a “sociolinguistic” research field, sociolinguistics of fiction is distinguished from the broader field of “pragmatics of fiction” (see the recent volume edited by Locher & Jucker 2017), by focusing on “character indexing” (Culpeper & Fernandez-Quintanilla 2017) through sociolinguistic diversity (e.g. geographical dialects, sociolects, minority languages)
