The conception of the ahl al-bayt, "people of the house," "family," or "household" of the Prophet Muhammad plays a vital role in Islamic thought and piety. In the tashahhud portion of the ritual prayers, Muslims of all persuasions supplicate daily, "O God! Bless Muhammad and his family (al), as you blessed Abraham and his family." This article examines the notion of the ahl al-bayt in the Quran, the Prophetic tradition, and in Muslim thought spanning many geographical regions and time periods.
The Holy Ahl-i Bayt in the Prophetic Traditions, 2020
Excerpt: The paramount importance of the recognition of the position of the holy ahl-i bayt in Islam is well-known. They are one of the two weighty things (thaqalayn) left by the holy Prophet for the sake of guidance. He also compared them with the Ark of Ḥaz̤rat Nūḥ as the means of salvation. An attempt has been made in this collection to gather certain unanimously accepted Aḥādīth about their position, love for and devotion to them. The collection is mainly based on the Kanzu’l-ʿummāl of ʿAllāmah ʿAlī al-Muttaqī (Beirut, 1399/1979) and Mishkātu’l-maṣābīḥ of ʿAllāmah Waliyyu’d-Dīn Abū ʿAbd Allāh Maḥmūd (Lahore, n.d.), the two important comprehensive sources of Aḥādīth of Sunnī Islam. These sources in their turn are based on the six canonical collections and other sources. The Aḥādīth numbers of the Kanzu’l-ʿummāl and the volume and page number of Mishkātu’l-maṣābīḥ are given in this collection to enable the readers to refer to the original sources easily. This excerpt is part of the author’s introduction given on page iii.

Islamic Law and Society, 2020
Although Islamic law generally identifies all free Muslim males as equal members of society, irrespective of race or ancestry, a peculiar exception is made for those who claim patrilineal descent from the Arab chieftain Hashim b. ʿAbd Manaf, the great-grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad. Drawing on hagiography and hadith, Sunni and Shi‘i authors ascribe special nobility, privileges and customs to members of the clan of Hashim. Jurists also incorporated their adoration of and respect for the Prophet’s family into their views of Islamic law. In particular, since the Prophet Muhammad was revered as an individual who was pure (tahir, zaki), some jurists held that Hashimids possessed the same purity. The Prophet’s identities as an Arab and as a Qurashi also conferred certain legal privileges on members of these groups. After noting parallels to other high-status groups in early Muslim society, I examine more than a dozen laws that classical Sunni and Twelver Shi‘i jurists characterized as specific to the Prophet’s progeny and Household (ahl al-bayt).

It is crucial for individuals to learn about the factors contributing to their salvation. Quranic verses refer to "righteous actions" among such factors. Many hadiths in the exegesis of these verses state that true instances of righteous believers are the followers or Shīʿas of Imam ʿAlī, the first Shiite Imam. This raises the idea that there is an inextricable tie between embracing the Imamate and wilāya (authority) of Ahl al-Bayt (Prophet Muḥammad's Household) and righteous actions. In this article, we scrutinize the semantics of "righteous actions" (al-ʿamal al-ṣāliḥ) and the common effects of such actions and embracement of the authority of Ahl al-Bayt to establish the above connection: a necessary condition for an action to be characterized as righteous is that its agent embraces the authority of Ahl al-Bayt. The method of this research is descriptiveanalytic and library-based, and given the significance of the Quranic exegesis al-Mīzān, it is taken as our source for interpreting the verses in question.

The Central Agency on Statistics states that the divorce rate in Indonesia has increased significantly after the pandemic. Indonesia has the largest Muslim majority population in the world, obviously, being a role model for the Muslim World, including in terms of family management. The term “Ahl al-Bayt” linguistically means household of a person which generally refers to a man himself, his wife(s), children at the very least and can extends to whoever lives within that person's guardianship. There has been an age-long controversy between the Ahlu Sunnah and the Shi'ah regarding the identity of the noble Prophet's Ahl al-Bayt. And what is expected to be an academic and knowledge based dialogue is usually being generated to an Armageddon on the fact that each side seemed to protect her position rigidly. Even though many things have been said on the subject, yet the precise important point are usually left out. This short article touch this specific in a simple academic manner.

The respect and veneration accorded to the family of the Prophet Muḥammad are unparalleled in Islamic society. Political or religious affiliations notwithstanding, the Prophet’s family – most importantly his descendants through his daughter Fāṭima and his cousin ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, collectively known as the ʿAlids – were held in high esteem even by those who rejected their claims to the leadership of the Muslim community. Within the hierarchy of Islamic society, the ʿAlids were ‘a blood aristocracy without peer'. This first social history of the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad in early Islam This first in-depth study of the 'Alids focuses on the crucial formative period from the Abbasid Revolution of 750 to the Saljuq period of 1100. Exploring their rise from both a religious point of view and as a social phenomenon, Bernheimer investigates how they attained and extended the family’s status over the centuries. The 'Alids are the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad, the elite family of Islam. The respect and veneration they are accorded is unparalleled in Islamic society, regardless of political or religious affiliation. And they have played a major role Islamic history, from famous early rebels to the founders and eponyms of major Islamic sects, and from 9th-century Moroccan and 10th-century Egyptian rulers to the current King of Jordan, the Ayatollah Khomeini and the Aga Khan. Key Features In-depth exploration of the distinction between Shi'ites and 'Alids: opens new possibilities for the understanding of the sectarian differences between Sunnis and Shi'ites Based on a wide range of primary sources in both Arabic and Persian Draws on historical, legal and biographical material Critically examines recently published genealogical works on the 'Alid family
