Motherhood and society at Unterhautzenthal, Lower Austria.
This paper utilises skeletal evidence (n=57) from settlement features and graves at
Unterhautzenthal, Lower Austria, to outline our methodological approach of researching
motherhood in prehistory. Unterhautzenthal includes the grave of a pregnant teenager, a triple
grave of a woman with two children and a family grave of a man, woman and baby;
additional women’s graves include remains of neonates and young children. Comparing
archaeological context information with osteo-biographical data lets us infer conclusions
about the social status of women and how Bronze Age motherhood was conceptualised.
The archaeological approach includes a gender and age analysis of material culture and Social
Index calculations. The osteological analysis includes age, sex, body height, health indicators
and pathologies, with an emphasis on pelvic changes. Physical traces that may relate to strain
through pregnancy and childbirth were explored in detail.
In addition to morphological assessment of the entire skeletal collection, we apply tooth
cementum annulation analysis, 14C dating, DNA analysis and δ13C/δ15N isotope analysis to
selected individuals.
These data, in conjunction with demographic modelling, enables us to draw conclusions about
women’s age at first pregnancy and the average number of children per woman, as well as the
cultural and social context of motherhood.

Lithic projectiles and other chipped stone industry of Nitra Culture. Gender and
technology.
The roots of socially stratified society of advanced Bronze Age in Central Europe arise from
turbulent changes at the end of Eneolithic and in the Early Bronze Age. Nitra Culture is an
important element in this process. The significance of lithic industry in these exceptional
periods is somewhat unjustly outshined by the attractiveness of copper and bronze objects and
their inborn potential to reflect social status of their owners. Lithic industry, which was found
in large cemeteries of Nitra Culture in the past century, is now re-analysed using a
combination of modern methods and approaches. New information is available regarding the
treatment of lithic raw materials in various phases of their life cycle, in connection with age
and sex of buried individuals. Previously unclassified types of tools or whole toolkits, as well
as a wide range of semi-finished products reflecting production processes and distribution of
this knowledge and experiences within population, are newly identified. Analysis of the most
attractive lithic tool of Nitra Culture – the projectiles – is included in our multifocal research.
Two largest lithic collections of Nitra Culture, i.e. Mýtna Nová Ves and Holešov –
Zdražilovska, are compared. This comparison brings new information on regional differences
in reflections of social structure, traditions and production practices.
Kořeny sociálně stratifikované společnosti rozvinuté doby bronzové střední Evropy vychází z
turbulentního vývoje závěru eneolitu a časné doby bronzové. Nitranská kultura je významným
elementem v tomto procesu. Význam kamenné štípané industrie je v těchto mimořádných
obdobích poněkud neprávem zastíněn rozvíjejícím se uplatněním nejprve měděných a vzápětí
bronzových výrobků a jejich apriorního potenciálu reflektovat společenské postavení svých
nositelů. Kamenná industrie pocházející z rozsáhlých pohřebišť nitranské kultury
zkoumaných v minulém století je nyní znovu analyzována pomocí kombinace moderních
metod a přístupů. Nové vyhodnocení přináší nové informace o zacházení s kamennou
surovinou v různých fázích jejího životního cyklu, v souvislostech s věkovými skupinami i
Mýtna Nová Ves a Holešov – Zdražilovska. Tato komparace skýtá další informace o
regionálních odlišnostech odrazů sociální struktury, tradic i výrobních praxí.

Symposial” drinking rituals of the European Bronze Age elite.
Importance of drinking and feasting activities in early hierarchical societies were intensively
studied and discussed by many authors. There are not only customs but also special vessels
which were part of shared symbolic behaviour, as the previous research has pointed out.
The goal of my paper is to document that similarities of particular parts of material culture
may not mean just the stylistic influence of one region on another when we usually tend to
direct the influences from more developed regions into the less developed ones. It can be
argued, too, that some of the similarities are independent; they could develop from traditional
local elements when the same customs led to emergence of similar material culture.
I present this issue on the example of a ceramic hoard from Lozorno (SW Slovakia), dated to
the final phases of Tumulus Culture (Bartík et al. 2013; Bartík and Hajnalová 2004). One of
the drinking vessels (Bartík and Hajnalová 2004, Obr. 3.2, 5.3) represents very close parallel
to LM II/LH IIB kylixes (e.g. Ephyrean cups) in Aegean which makes both vessel types
contemporary. It was a period of multiple changes within the local and cross-continental
scope. Not only the Lozorno ceramic hoard but the entire Middle Bronze Age (in the Central
European concept) must be interpreted with extreme severity due to their enormous
complexity.

Local traditions of pottery making and regional exchange in the Early Bronze Age
(Strawberry tarts and cutlet with dumplings). / Lokální hrnčířské tradice a regionální
výměna ve starší době bronzové (Jahodové koláčky i řízek s knedlíkem).
At the end of the Early Bronze Age in Central Europe, in the area between the Bohemian
Massif and the lowland around Carpathians, a mosaic of fortified hills and open settlements
was populated by communities more or less involved in long-distance trade and metallurgy.
The vast amount of preserved pottery of typical shapes, sometimes found as ceramic hoards
and often with a polished surface and a very fine composition, inspired scholars to presume a
high level of pottery production and the establishment of a specialized craft. The aim of this
work is a comparative study of provenance and technological characteristics of individual
pottery collections and mainly an illustration and evaluation of different technological
traditions. Basic methods used were ceramic micropetrography combined with low or nondestructive portable XRF analysis supplemented by X-ray diffraction for mineral
determination and comparison with potential raw materials. Archaeometry-based indirect
evidence indicates that tableware could be a result of intensified production. It could be a
reflection of hierarchical and centralised regional economies. Spatial distribution of
technological features shows multiple parallel levels of technological traditions existing
beside ceramic styles. Some important technological features, such as addition of grog,
formed spatial macro-structures.

Metal detectors and common Bronze Age settlements. / Detektory kovů a běžná sídliště
doby bronzové.
Systematic collecting of artefacts from surface layers of the Bronze Age sites with the help of
metal detectors makes it possible to acquire whole sets of finds interesting from typological,
technological and economic points of view. Comparing the finds from different sites, periods
and regions can identify wider trends in the amount of metal used and the way of its
distribution and processing. In this way we can illustrate significant differences between Early
and Late Bronze Age, as exemplified by selected localities in South Moravia.
technologického a ekonomického hlediska. Srovnáním nálezových spekter různých lokalit,
období a regionů je možné identifikovat širší trendy v množství využívaného kovu, způsobu
jeho distribuce a zpracování. Tímto způsobem lze na příkladu vybraných lokalit z jižní
Moravy ilustrovat výrazné rozdíly mezi starší a mladší dobou bronzovou.

Depoty z Opalic (okr. České Budějovice). K problematice deponování kovových
artefaktů v areálech hradišť starší a počátku střední doby bronzové.
Opalice in Südböhmen bisher keine Parallelen.
do starší doby bronzové, což potvrdilo i zatím první radiokarbonové datum získané z depotu
Depoty č. 1 a 2
přinesly i zajímavá archeobotanická a archeozoologická zjištění (např. přítomnost rybích
nejbohatších hradišť starší a počátku střední doby bronzové. V Čechách pouze hradiště na
Slánské hoře u Slaného poskytlo rovněž čtyři depoty z tohoto období, na dalších pak byly
nalezeny maximálně dva depoty (např. Mříč – Dívčí Kámen, Hrdlořezy – Předliška). V
příspěvku bude zmapován fenomén ukládání depotů na výšinných lokalitách období Br A –
A2/B1 v širším středoevropském kontextu a bude porovnán s fenoménem ukládání kovových
depotů na výšinných lokalitách epochy popelnicových polí.

Notes on X-ray fluorescence analyses of metal hoards from South Bohemia. /
Poznámky k rentgen-fluorescenčním analýzám kovových depotů z jižních Čech.
South Bohemia is a region with the largest concentration of Early Bronze Age so-called "raw
material" hoards within the Czech Republic. The term “raw material hoard” is generally used
with collective finds of ingots of various shapes (ring ingots, rib ingots, plano-convex ingots),
however, some of them (for example the so-called ring ingots – Ösenringe) may not have
been intended for further remelting.
The paper is based on recent X-ray fluorescence analyses of such hoards from different sites
(Hluboká nad Vltavou, Kájov, Mýto u Hořic Nová Ves 3, Přídolí, Rychnov nad Malší, Zlatá
Koruna, etc.). Attention will be paid to the issues of terminology, sampling and interpretation
of results. The analysed samples mostly represented the so-called copper ribs with a relatively
high alloy variability, including specimens with a high lead or tin content.

Modes of cultural contact and cultural change: Acculturation, Colonization and
Hybridisation.
The mechanisms of cultural change and cultural contacts have long been discussed in
European prehistory. There were two main models: autochthonous development and
migrations. This was also the case with Mediterranean Archaeology, where we already have
some “historical” information for the Bronze Age. However, more advanced studies,
influenced also by Post-colonial Theory, opened a whole set of median positions, which
involve movement of people, but not necessarily processes of colonization or even migration.
The paper will attempt to outline some of the currently used models in the Aegean and East
Mediterranean Archaeology and to open a discussion on the extent to which Central European
prehistory could also profit from these models. The Early and Middle Bronze Age on the
Middle Danube, and especially the appearance of Únětice elements in SW Slovakia, actually
call for new modes of explanation going beyond the arrival of new stock of people.

Social cohesion in the Early Bronze Age. Santovka as case study. / Sociálna kohézia v
dobe bronzovej. Santovka ako príkladová štúdia.
No social group can exist without any social cohesion. The same is true of the Early Bronze
Age communities who were also dependent on the processes necessary to maintain the
sustainable level of healthy social communication within the group. The already finished
excavation project at Santovka (Southwest Slovakia), a medium-sized (tell-like) fortified site
with an exceptionally high number of prestigious artefacts of exotic origin and clear evidence
of extensive metalworking activities, provides an interesting case study. The site is
surrounded by thermal springs which are famous for their salubrious qualities. The character
of uncovered finds as well as geographical position of the site suggest that Santovka was a
place where social entities were able to merge, transform as well as maintain their distinctive
character. These processes were obviously dependent on proper social cohesion. We suppose
that the local thermal springs were a natural place of healing (solidarity) as well as of
religious (social integration) qualities and therefore of a supra- regional importance. If we
accept the feasting as a background for social cohesion on subconscious level, then the other
shared (often, but not necessarily ritualized) activities are not so different. Metalworking,
pottery production, hunting and grain storage could play a similar role. Methodology and
theoretical models used in this discourse are based on the philosophy/sociology of R K.
Merton and his followers as well as J. Habermas and B. Latour.

Symbolism of birch tree in the Bronze Age/Symbolika brezy v staršej dobe bronzovej.
The authors of this paper try to interpret the artefacts made of birch bark, which were found in
the famous well of Otomani Culture dug out in a travertine mound in Gánovce. The
discovered birch bark imitations of bronze lock-rings and cylindrical vessels are the only finds
of this type in Slovakia. Based on the presence of bronze lock-rings in burials of the OtomaniFüzesaboni cultural complex, birch bark vessels and their ceramic imitations in a wider region
of Central Europe, birch tree and artefacts made of birch bark are interpreted as associated
with feminine sphere of the gender-divided ideology of the Early Bronze Age.
Autori v článku interpretujú artefakty z brezovej kôry pochádzajúce zo známeho nálezu
studne otomanskej kultúry, vyhĺbenej do travertínovej kopy v Gánovciach. Ide
o napodobeniny bronzových záušníc a torzá valcovitých nádob. Z územia Slovenska ide
o jediné nálezy tohto typu. Na základe prítomnosti bronzových záušníc v hroboch otomanskofüzesabonyského kultúrneho komplexu a brezových nádob a ich keramických napodobenín
v širšej stredoeurópskej oblasti interpretujú brezu a artefakty z nej ako ženskú súčasť
bipolárne rozdeleného „mužského“ a „ženského“ sveta ideológie staršej doby bronzovej.

Siedlungsnetzwerke des Otomani-Füzesabony-Kulturkreises. Vorstellung eines neuen
Forschungsprojektes.
Das bronzezeitliche Siedlungssystem des sog. Otomani-Füzesabony-Komplexes wurde in den
letzten paar Jahren in Ungarn intensiv erforscht.

Early Bronze Age enclosures in SW Poland.
The aim of the paper is to present the current state of research on Early Bronze Age
enclosures in SW Poland. Until recently, this area in general was pointed out as having a low
number of known enclosures. Only three, interpreted as Early Bronze Age fortified
settlements, were known thanks to more or less limited excavation: Jędrychowice (Opole
province), Nowa Cerekiew (Opole province) and Radłowice (Lower Silesia province).
Over recent years there has been a significant growth in the number of newly discovered sites.
This was possible through the application of non-invasive prospection (e.g. aerial
photography, geophysical survey) as a fundamental element of the applied research
methodology. The surveys were followed by small-scale excavations, exploring the
archaeological features and obtaining various material samples for a wide spectrum of
specialised post-excavation analyses (e.g. radiocarbon dating, anthropology, archaeobotany,
archaeozoology, soil/sediment micromorphology, aDNA, artefact studies etc.).
An exceptional circular structure was located near Pietrowice Wielkie (Silesia province). The
enclosure can be dating between the second half of the nineteen century BC and the first half
of the seventeen century BC. Magnetic survey revealed that the structure consisted of two
concentric ditches, the outer one with a diameter of 190 m and the inner one of about 120 m
in diameter. The ditches had a width ranging from 8 m to 10 m. A large number of diverse
magnetic anomalies, other than ditches, were also detected inside and outside the area
enclosed by the ditches. Most of them are oval or circular in shape and possess a diameter of
approximately 1-3 m. Excavations revealed that they emerged from trapezoidal pits that may
be interpreted as relics of storage pits, which were subsequently turned into places of ritual
activity involving animal sacrifices. The current state of research does not allow for an
unambiguous interpretation of functions and forms, but the accumulation of storage pits,
especially their concentration in the space between the ditches, is extremely interesting. This
may suggest the existence of a centralized system for the storage of agricultural produce,
which was common at that time in different parts of Europe and was linked to the origins of
social complexity, stratified society, a structured settlement system and division of labour.
The Pietrowice Wielkie structure most likely had a defensive function, but its main aim was
associated with centralized control over agriculture and craft production. This does not
preclude symbolic, social or ritual activities taking place there.
Another circular enclosure located near Przyłęgów (Lower Silesia province) was identified
during a 2014 aerial survey and verified by a magnetic survey and small excavation. The
enclosure consists of a single ditch about 80 m in diameter. There was no evidence of inner
buildings or of an inner palisade. The structure can probably be dated back to the seventeen
century BC.
New and extremely promising information was also obtained for the enclosure in Radłowice
(Lower Silesia province). The site’s form was probably much larger and more complex than
previously thought and it covered an area of more than 100 ha.

Early Bronze Age settlement structure north of the Middle Danube. / Sídlisková
štruktúra v oblasti severne od stredného Dunaja v staršej dobe bronzovej.
The reconstruction of settlement structure has long been one of the main goals of every
prehistoric archaeologist. In the most cases, such reconstructions are only limited to mapping
of all known sites from particular periods or archaeological cultures. Their geographical
position is a basis for another spatial values (altitude, proximity analysis etc.), which are used
for subsequent analysis. The result is a reconstructed settlement structure, which anticipates
parallel existence of settlements with uncertain chronological position. The problem also
consists in assigning values to individual attributes according to the present state. In our
contribution we will try to reconstruct the development of settlement structure of the Early
Bronze Age societies in the area north of the Middle Danube. We will not only describe the
settlement structure itself, but also present the possible impact of social habits and ideas on
the Early Bronze Age settlement forms in the area concerned.
Rekonštrukcia sídliskovej štruktúry patrí už dlhší čas k základným cieľom archeológov
skúmajúcich všetky obdobia, dobu bronzovú nevynímajúc. Vo väčšine prípadov sa však
takéto rekonštrukcie obmedzujú len na zmapovanie všetkých zistených lokalít danej kultúry či
obdobia.
samotnej sídliskovej štruktúry, no predstavíme aj možný vplyv spoločenských zvyklostí a
predstáv na podobu sídliskových foriem v staršej dobe bronzovej na skúmanom území.

Continuity of Early Bronze Age settlement areas – a case study from Pálava region.
There are numbers of settlements in Moravia where both Únětice and Věteřov cultures are
present and share the same settlement area or site. What was the relation between these
components? Was the occupation of these areas and sites continuous? How can these traces
be interpreted in terms of living societies?
I will try to enquire about these questions from a perspective of settlement archaeology in a
couple of case studies from the Pálava micro-region.

Regionen in mehreren Aspekten.

First concept and then research: good idea? A case study of the fortified settlement
Hoste and its dynamic development at the end of the Early Bronze Age.
The contribution presents results of survey, excavation and archaeological (and other)
analyses from the fortified settlement in Hoste. The paper deals with chronological
development of the settlement based on specific finds, absolute dating and stratigraphic
aspects as well as with spatial relationships, the use of the fortified area and fortification itself.
However, it is also focused on the question whether the large amount of finds from this
settlement have any potential for further research, as the preliminary studies have already
been published. The paper therefore contains a comparison of newly obtained data, results of
rescue excavation carried out in the 20th century, and the already published interpretations.
Our aim is to present that the excavation method and the post-processing of data from a small
systematic excavation can provide more information than thousands of finds from large
uncovered and excavated areas.

Vráble – an Early Bronze Age central settlement in SW Slovakia (excavations in 20072017). / Vráble – centrálne sídlisko zo staršej doby bronzovej na JZ Slovensku (výskum
v rokoch 2007-2017).
Fortified settlements represent one of the most important sources of knowledge about the
economic and social relations in the Early Bronze Age. The archaeological site in Vráble has
a prominent position among them. Thanks to a combination of non-invasive methods,
archaeological excavation and interdisciplinary cooperation, a huge settlement complex was
discovered, in the centre of which there is a fortified settlement enclosed by three ditches. In
its inner area, but also outside the fortification, almost 160 house plans were detected, which
were deliberately arranged to form radial rows. Analogies to such architecture can be found in
Eastern Mediterranean and in the Eastern Urals region of Russia and North-Western
Kazakhstan. East and west of the fortification in Vráble there is an economic background
composed of batteries of storage pits. South of the settlement, a burial ground is situated with
high density of graves. The location of the fortified settlement on a junction of trade routes,
distribution of non-ferrous metal ores and goods made from them were the main preconditions
for the formation of this central site. The accumulation of goods and emergence of social elite
were closely connected with the site.

Results of archaeological excavation in Rybník (2004-2017). / Výsledky archeologického
výskumu v Rybníku.
The fortified settlement in Rybník (Levice Dist.) lies in the corridor of the so-called
“Slovakian Gate”. It is an area where the river Hron leaves the mountains and flows into the
Danube Lowland. This corridor had a strategic importance throughout the whole prehistory
and the Early Middle Ages, as it is evident from a large number of fortified settlements and
hillforts.
An archaeological excavation for research and documentation purposes was taking place here
since 2004 (2004-2009 Institute of Archaeology of Slovak Academy of Sciences in
cooperation with Romano-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute,
2010-2017 Institute of Archaeology of Slovak Academy of Sciences in cooperation with
Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Arts, Comenius University). 14 excavation seasons
revealed, that strategically positioned fortified settlement from the Early Bronze Age in
Rybník represented cultural and trade center. It controlled communities heading towards
volcanic mountain ranges in Middle Slovakia, where were located deposits of non-ferrous
metals. Furthermore, the settlement was involved in the distribution of the raw material and
final products, as well.
Paper will present the main results of archaeological excavation in a broader middle European
context, focusing on specific contexts and find collections.

an extraordinary amount of valuable archaeological material. What was left from this site,
already partially destroyed, is now mostly excavated. Now it is time to summarise what we
already know and what needs to be done with such a huge number of acquired data. We are
already sure that these data will provide answers to some particular questions concerning the
end of the Early Bronze Age in the Carpathian Basin and shed some new light on certain
aspects of life of prehistoric populations in this period. We will talk about what was found as
well as on future perspectives of research.

Ritual pit from Spišský Štvrtok.
prelomu staršej a strednej doby bronzovej.
nálezovej situácie, ktorú dokumentuje pôvodná kresbová a fotografická dokumentácia.
Vertikálna stratigrafia v spojení s analýzou technologických, morfologických a
tafonomických aspektov archeologických nálezov významne prispieva k poznaniu procesov
spojených so vznikom, depozíciou a postdepozičnými vplyvmi.
komplexného rozboru, somatickej charakteristiky a patológií antropologického materiálu.
a úkony zahŕňajúce ľudské obety, pričom nemožno vylúčiť ani parciálne "obetovanie" zvierat,
príp. symbolické depozície artefaktov a sídliskového odpadu (keramika, drobné predmety).
Tieto aspekty možno bližšie interpretovať s využitím poznatkov religionistiky, etnológie a
archeológie v kontexte analogických nálezov z chronologického úseku staršej a strednej doby
bronzovej.
The phenomenon of depositing human remains in settlement features is relatively common
and frequent in the Bronze Age, as well as throughout the whole prehistory. Settlement
burials are generally characterized by a relatively high variability. Equally diverse also were
probable reasons and causes of "unusual" manipulation of skeletal remains. In our
contribution we will focus on evaluation of a collective burial consisting of nine human
individuals found at the bottom of pit 40/74. It is situated in the area of a fortified settlement
in Spišský Štvrtok, which is dated to the end of the Early Bronze Age and belongs culturally
to the Otomani-Füzesabony complex.
Of crucial importance for the interpretation of the pit from Spišský Štvrtok is a reconstruction
of stratigraphy, which is well-documented by original drawings and photographs. Vertical
stratigraphy, in conjunction with the analysis of technological, morphological and taphonomic
aspects of archaeological finds, contributes significantly to the knowledge of processes
associated with formation, deposition and post-depositional transformations. Assessment of
these aspects is also elementary for interpretation of possible causes of emergence of the
feature, as well as for definition of its hypothetical meaning to local community. These are
also supported by the results of a complex anthropological analysis of human remains.
Moreover, the information spectrum available is significantly extended by preliminary
zoological determination of osteological material.
Considering the results of analysis, pit 40/74 can be classified as a cult or ritual place, which
allows an at least partial insight into hardly reconstitutable religious beliefs of the then people.
Religious practices and rituals involving human sacrifices along with possible partial
"offerings" of animals, symbolic deposition of artefacts or settlement refuse (pottery, single
finds) may have probably been part of the spiritual sphere. These particulars can be further
interpreted using the knowledge of religious studies, ethnology and archaeology, as well as in
the context of analogous findings from the Early and Middle Bronze Age.

V letech
1926-1927 zkoumal K. Schirmeisen sídliště mohylové kultury a získal i nečetné nálezy
Prozkoumali asi 30 sídlištních jam únětické kultury a několik jam
mohylové kultury. Častým objevem byly kostrové pohřby v sídlištních jámách. Z únětického
sídliště získali velké množství keramického materiálu. V předběžné publikaci zveřejnili však
jen celé nebo téměř celé nádoby. Naleziště zařadili na základě keramiky a výskytu pohřbů v
sídlištních jámách do mladšího vývoje únětické kultury.
sídliště v Černých Polích do staršího stupně únětické kultury.

In

internationalen Projektes erforscht.

Roggendorf – Steinleiten: Neues zu einem „klassischen“ Fundort der Aunjetitzer Kultur
in NÖ.

The onset of the Middle Bronze Age as exemplified by Moravia./ Na sklonku starší doby
bronzové, příklad Moravy.
The existing chronological systems of (not only) the Early Bronze Age are based on an
arbitrary division of attributes which have been associated with chronological specifics.
Among them are not only the properties of artefacts, but also individual forms of burial rites
and settlements. The present research, on the other hand, strives to define more robust phases
and follow up the continuity of individual phenomena. Systematic recording and rescue
excavations enable to get an idea of quantity and types of archaeological evidence, both
settlements and burial grounds, and of periods when they gradually vanished. These trends are
evident with burial rites, where they lead to only minimal archaeological recordability of
burials since the end of the Early Bronze Age. Settlements, on the other hand, were evidently
continuous. The Early Bronze Age hilltop sites gradually declined, but flatland settlements
continued.
This paper is focused on burial rites at the end of the Early Bronze Age; on the possibility of
archaeological recording of burials, above all on the problem with the end of burial grounds
of Únětice Culture in Moravia and their transformation into burials on the ground surface
under barrows; on attributes, which have been considered chronological but which are in fact
distributed over a longer period of time; and on absolute dates, which can verify these trends.
The paper wants to answer three questions based on known radiocarbon dates: Are burials in
settlement pits typical for the end of the Early Bronze Age?, When do the Únětice burial sites
end? and Where are the graves of the final horizon of the Early Bronze Age in Moravia?
pohřebního ritu a sídel. Současný výzkum naopak směřuje k definici robustnějších stupňů a
sledování průběžnosti jevů. Systematické evidence a záchranné výzkumy umožňují vytvořit si

The Early Bronze Age halberd from the Váh River. / Ojedinelý nález stabdolchu
z Váhu.
An exceptional discovery of a halberd was made in the former riverbed of Váh near Hlohovec
town (southwest Slovakia) in the summer of 2017. Also known as „Stabdolch“ in German, the
artefact is almost 24.5 cm long with a weight of almost 300 grams and is very well preserved
with triangular ornamentation. Beside the artefact alone, the find location also is important
and the artefact can be included in the collection of so-called „water finds“ which are of
special archaeological interest for some time. In this poster we will provide further
information regarding the halberd as well as perspectives for further analyses.

Middle Bronze Age settlement in Bohatá - Pavlov dvor (SW Slovakia).
The aim of the paper is to present the preliminary results of systematic excavation on Bohatá
– Pavlov dvor (Hurbanovo District) site which took place in summer 1971 and was led by A.
Točík (Institute of Archaeology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Nitra) and P.
Ratimorská (Museum of Danube Region in Komárno). The importance of the site lies in the
fact that it is one of the largest known settlements of Tumulus Culture in the eastern part of
Danubian Lowland in Slovakia.
The excavation yielded 14 archaeological features and dense cultural layers containing
thousands of finds (more than 5500 pottery fragments and many different types of other
artefacts). This material is very diverse and offers a wide range of options for analyses and
interpretation. It also constitutes a fundamental basis for distinguishing specific patterns
among various pottery styles of Tumulus Culture groups in the Carpathian Basin. The
processing of this material represents a necessary and significant step in the stagnant research
into the Tumulus Period (BB-BC period) in the area of what is now Southwest Slovakia and
North-Central Hungary.

The criteria of chronological and historical synchronisation of the Central European
and Aegean Bronze Age?
Our poster presents an overview of the contemporary chronological systems synchronizing
archaeological phases of Central-European Early and Middle Bronze Age with their
counterparts in the Aegean region trying to harmonize traditional and archaeological
evidence with some hindsight to radiocarbon dates.
We discuss the possible methodologies of how to criticize or verify the validity of each of the
chronological systems, their synchronisation, and if some events in any of those regions could
initiate changes in the other.
We challenge these problems through the interregional comparison of the settlement structure
changes (spatio-temporal modelling), absolute chronology (summed probability distribution),
and changes in economy, long-distance trade, spiritual life and climate changes.
Similarities and differences in the culture-historical development of Central Europe and
Eastern Mediterranean are pointed out.

Wieselburg settlement feature in Bratislava-Rusovce. The problems of cultural dating
on the example of Late Eneolithic/Early Bronze Age pottery/ Wieselburský sídliskový
objekt z Bratislavy-Rusoviec. Problém kultúrneho zaradenia na príklade keramiky
z neskorého eneolitu/staršej doby bronzovej
The authors present on the example of an Early Bronze Age feature from south-western
Slovakia the problem of relative-chronological dating, which is relevant to the paradigm of
archaeological culture. A few pottery assemblages are known containing only a small amount
of „culturally datable“ potsherds, while the remaining part bears mixed inter-/multicultural
elements which go back to Final or Late Eneolithic and are distributed over adjacent
territories of the Middle Danube region. A question arises: what is the dating of the feature
based on? The authors deal with the problem of archaeological culture, (post-)deposition
processes and thick-walled and fine ware as well.
Autori prezentujú na príklade objektu zo staršej doby bronzovej na juhozápadnom Slovensku
problém relatívno-chronologického datovania s ohľadom na paradigmu archeologickej
kultúry. Poznáme niekoľko nálezových celkov, ktoré obsahujú len malé množstvo
„datovateľnej“ keramiky, pričom zvyšné nesú prvky umožňujúce len všeobecné zaradenie,
a to spätne až k mlado- a neskoroeneolitickému obdobiu a taktiež inter-/multikultúrne

Lausitzer Heideland in Niederschlesien.
Dank chronologischer Verifikationen konnte man
wissenschaftlichen Bearbeitung. Die hier präsentierten Ergebnisse haben nur einen
einleitenden Charakter. Weitere Untersuchungen folgen.

Radiocarbon analysis of human remains from the Únětice Culture burial ground at
Prague-Nové Butovice / Radiokarbonové datování antropologických pozůstatků z hrobů
únětické kultury v Praze Nových Butovicích.
This paper presents the results of radiocarbon dating from the Early Bronze Age graves at
Prague-Nové Butovice, excavated in 1985. These 29 graves contained typical finds of the
Classical and Postclassical Phases of the Únětice Culture. The results of the subsequent CRL
and AMS methods of human remains dating are discussed in further considerations associated
with traditional dating of individual phases of Únětice Culture. Mutual comparison with
radiocarbon dating from the other burial grounds of Únětice Culture brings new knowledge in
this field.
Tento příspěvek prezentuje výsledky radiokarbonového datování z únětického pohřebiště v
Praze – Nových Butovicích, prozkoumaného v roce 1985. Těchto 29 hrobů obsahovalo
typickou výbavu klasické a poklasické fáze únětické kultury. Výsledky následné CRL a AMS
metody datování lidských pozůstatků diskutují další úvahy spojené s tradičním datováním
jednotlivých fází únětické kultury. Vzájemná komparace dat z pohřebiště v Praze-Nových
Butovicích s dalšími únětickými pohřebišti přináší v této oblasti nové poznatky.

A palstave from Libeř (Prague-West District) and other bronze finds from the Lower
Sázava River region. A contribution to the genesis of Middle Bronze Age palstaves.
In 2016 a bronze palstave with a trapezoidal flanged recess was found with the help of a metal
detector in the cadastral district of Libeř (Prague-West District). The artefact is relatively
unusual from the typological viewpoint and lacks exact analogies in Bohemian material. The
palstave can roughly be classified as of Early to Middle Bronze Age date (Br A2/B1) when
new palstave types with heart-shaped and especially pointed flanged recesses started to
develop. At the close of the Middle Bronze Age and at the beginning of the Late Bronze Age
(Br C2/D), they changed into relatively massive palstaves with a pointed lobe. However, the
Libeř palstave seems to stand out from the main development line.
This new find also originates from an area where practically no traces of settlement or
funerary activities during the Early or Middle Bronze Age are known and the only relevant
evidence for the presence of man is represented by isolated finds of bronze objects. From
among earlier finds made in the broader area of the Lower Sázava River region we can name
three bronze axes of Únětice Culture (Jílové u Prahy, Blažim). More recent metal detector
finds from 2010–2013 also included the discovery of three bronze artefacts datable to the time
of the Middle Bronze Age Tumulus Culture. It is a palstave with an elongated, pointed
flanged recess, a decorated disc-head of a two-piece pin (Slapy) and a sickle with a
perpendicular side tang (Březová).
The discoveries of these bronze objects in an agriculturally not very suitable area which was
probably predominantly forested, without any evidence for contemporary settlement, indicate
their intentional deposition during some unspecific activities in the region (a "traveller's" or
"propitiating" thanksgiving offering?) rather than a mere unintentional loss suffered on the
way or during work in the forest.
