TORAH TEMPLE LAND ANCIENT JUDAISM(S) IN CONTEXT CONFERENCE, OCTOBER 8–10, 2018 NEW VENUE! HU BERLIN, THEOLOGISCHE FAKULTÄT, ROOM 113, BURGSTRASSE 26 This conference will explore the plurality of ancient Judaism and the related present debates on torah, temple, and land, which no longer are considered monolithic institutions in terms of meaning and function. The most commonly held view now is that it was not always the same texts, traditions, and/or individuals, that played the same central or authoritative role in the various existing strands of Judaism. The political, cultural, and social contexts of the larger Mediterranean world clearly differed from one region to another, so that scholars increasingly question the viability of defining specific or characteristic unifying traits of all Jewish communities and thus tend to refer to “Judaisms” rather than “Judaism”. Increased attention has also been paid to the distinctions and overlaps between self-perception and the perception of others (e.g. Greeks and Romans) regarding Jewish identity, practice, and belief. This conference is intended to deal with these and other related questions – e.g. the encounter of Judaism and Christianity and the situation of Judaism in the Roman empire – in a workshop setting in which scholars will engage with different views and ideas. Aktuelle Forschungen zum antiken Judentum haben dessen Vielfalt und Diversität herausgestellt. Mitunter wurden diese sogar auf die These zugespitzt, es sei angemessener von „Judentümern“ („Judaisms“) zu sprechen, um nicht der unzutreffenden Vorstellung einer einheitlichen religiösen und ethnischen Gemeinschaft in den diversen politischen und kulturellen Konstellationen Vorschub zu leisten. Damit ist zugleich die Frage nach übergreifenden Charakteristika „des“ Judentums in der Antike aufgeworfen. Das Symposium nähert sich dieser Fragestellung durch unterschiedliche Perspektiven auf drei für das antike Judentum zentrale Institutionen: Tempel, Torah und Land. Dabei wird deutlich werden, dass verschiedene Ausprägungen „des“ Judentums – etwa die jüdische Gemeinschaft in Elephantine, das samaritanische Judentum oder die hinter den Rollen vom Toten Meer stehenden Gruppen – jeweils eigene Sichtweisen auf diese Institutionen ausgebildet haben. Dabei werden literarische, soziale und religiöse Kontexte des antiken Judentums ausgeleuchtet, die auf verschiedene Weise zur Ausbildung von Perspektiven auf die drei genannten Institutionen beigetragen haben. Zudem sollen die Begegnung von Judentum und Christentum sowie die Situation jüdischer Gemeinden im Imperium Romanum in den Blick treten.
