1984, Sociology of Religion, Religious Studies IV (Honours) unit taught by Dr P. H. Vrijhof (Utrecht University), University of Sydney
This paper is an attempt to give an explanation of both sociology of religion and phenomenology of religion as separate disciplines using different methods; and to examine the similarities and differences between these two approaches. That they are related is undeniable: it is even possible to speak of "phenomenological sociology", and an examination of both disciplines reveals shared ambitions. However, it is important to emphasise the separate origins of phenomenology and sociology, and their individual developments. Finally, are these two approaches seeking the same thing? The religious behaviour of mankind is the data bank for both disciplines, but sociology is apparently searching for a social explanation of both the origin and perseverance of religious forms of behaviour, and phenomenology seeks the "essential" components of religion.
When Gods Spoke: Researches and Reflections on Religious Phenomena and Artefacts
The Curious Case of the Phenomenology of Religion2015 •
Phenomenology of religion as a research project has fallen out of favour in the past few decades. Yet discussions about the feasibility and relevance of the phenomenological approach continue. In one way or another most of the current approaches in the study of religion rely on the disciplinary background of the earlier phe-nomenologies. This article analyses a couple of the more recent proposals that have reconsidered the relevance of the phenomenological approach, aiming to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of these proposals in relation to the goals of the study of religion. Based on this review and analysis of current discussions I argue in the second half of my article that the phenomenology of religion can still serve as an important part of the study of religion and avoid criticisms it previously invited if it is remodelled into an endeavour of 'typologi-cal analysis' in the sense explained in the second half of this article. In one way or another all contemporary approaches to the study of religion relate to the phenomenology of religion. The most prevalent way is certainly conceptual: many (if not most) of the conceptual tools, their meanings and their supposed universality have been taken from the ty-pological and categorical distinctions of earlier generalized phenomenol-ogies. This is apparent from postmodernist approaches, which strongly oppose the phenomenology of religion, to the modern cognitive study of religion that aims to analyse and explain religion as a general phenomenon by highlighting many of the same characteristics that earlier were central to the phenomenologies of religion. Aside from conceptual tools, there is also the understanding that one should maintain neutrality in
Many people today find the topic on religion quite interesting. Others, due to their sensitiveness to religious questions, especially when religious beliefs or convictions are discussed, would rather avoid the topic of religion. In the study of sociology, however, it is but inevitable not to take up the topic of religion as a social institution. The purpose of this paper is not to be critical of any religion. The intention is simply to look at religion on its sociological perspective, or point of view. It shall be concerned merely on the study of the complementariness of religion and society in human history. In particular, it will: show the relationships between religion and society; present the psychological and sociological theories on the universality of the religious phenomenon and behavior; contain a definition of religion and its elements and society in its different evolutionary stages; and Present a theoretical representation that shows the complementariness of religion and society, including an explanation of each of the predominant forms of religious beliefs that cropped up in the evolution of the human society. This theoretical model will be presented in a tragic and comic framework of drama.
This article attempts to explain both the sociology of religion and the hermeneutics of religion as separate disciplines and uses different methods to examine the two approaches. It cannot be denied that they have an essential role in religion. The hermeneutics of religion emphasizes the interpretation of a religious text. In contrast, the sociology of religion wants to know the impact of religion on society and society's impact on religious life. It is therefore essential to highlight the separate origins and individual development of hermeneutics and sociology. Finally, what are the two approaches looking for? This article tends to answer this question in detail. Therefore, understanding religious texts is the first approach to the hermeneutics of religion. In contrast, religious behavior is the database of humanity, the sociology of religion, and seeks a social explanation of religious behavior patterns' persistence.

Notes on the deep sociology of religion1987 •
As a contribution to the study of religion, the paper discusses two different sets of questions: (1) Why do religions differ, and how do they function? (2) Why are people religious, and what are people up to when they engage in religious actions? More generally, the paper presents a semi-formal account of a theory of modes of coherence that links the structuring of Self/Other relations at the personal level to the character of politically maintained cultural regimes at the societal level. Four basic modes of coherence are recognised (the Transcendental, the Immanent, the Dialectical and the "Zen"), and the political consequences of each are explored in relation to the history, theology, mythology and social-interactional setting of a variety of religious traditions.

Religion from Sociological Perspectives: An Overview2022 •
The prime purpose of this article is to study religion from different paradigms or perspectives from a sociological viewpoint. Religion is defined as a social institution while economic reality, ideological support, and everyday interactions of people are also undertaken as core concepts. In fact, this article is an overview of the religion of three theoretical perspectives of sociology focusing on the work of Emile Durkheim, Robert K. Merton (the functionalist), Karl Marx, Max Weber, Friedrich Engels (the conflict), and Peter Berger (the interactionist). A brief discussion of each perspective is articulated clearly, followed by secondary sources including published books, book sections, blogs, research articles, and WebPages highlighting the foundations of the relevant theory. Afterward, the author reviews the discourses of the theorists regarding religion with its application to human society. Finally, the article provides a summary of these perspectives continuing to develop the ...

In almost 700 pages, The New Blackwell Companion to the Sociology of Religion attempts an all-encompassing approach to the study of religion in modern societies. This ambitious effort was edited by Bryan S Turner, an experienced scholar in the field, who also wrote the introduction and a concluding chapter. The book has an interdisciplinary focus and a historic-comparative viewpoint inspired by Weber. It is divided into 29 chapters, organized in seven well-defined sections and includes a very useful index at the end.
