For the first time, this report brings together the most popular accounts originating in MENA on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter. Each of these platforms is explored in more detail in this report, but below we outline the account with the largest number of followers, likes and subscribers, across MENA as well as the region's four biggest markets: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Featuring news and music channels, content creators, religious figures, politicians and sports stars, this chart shows the breadth of activity seen on different social media channels and the different ways in which users utilize them. Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah is the only person to be featured twice. The Liverpool player, and captain of the Egyptian national team, has the most popular Instagram and Twitter account stemming from Egypt. This paper aims to analyze the interest generated in social media of posts that were originally, just local or national concerns; yet, in time, became global phenomena. It studies two recent phenomena: the Arab Spring and Psys' Gangnam Style which demonstrate the transformative power of social media. Using secondary online data through data mining method, it looked into the Arab Spring incident and the popular video of Psy " The Gangnam Style, " which is a global sensation. Results reveal the spread of popularity across the world of the two from being mere national phenomena. This validates the theory used in this study.

The article explores the evolution of media image of Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau. In particular it takes interest in how Trudeau’s impactful use of traditional and social online media helped popularize and convey his positive portrayal to wider audiences, which at peak of Trudeau’s popularity amounted to a phenomenon called ‘Trudeaumania’. The article evaluates the effects and political implications of Trudeau’s media activity on his political career and posture, but also on the global reputation of Canada.

Despite the controversial name of “Twitter revolution”, which media referred to during the 2011 Tunisian or Egyptian uprisings, research revealed that only a very small amount of citizens actively used this social platform in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. However, although Facebook and traditional mass media reach a much broader audience, social scientists emphasised the qualitative – rather than quantitative – impact of Twitter, in framing and reporting local media events (Eltantawy and Wiest 2011; Meraz and Papacharissi, 2013). Studies also indicate that Twitter users in the Middle East manifest a particular interest for political topics (Salem and Mourtada, 2011). The strategic features of this communication channel along with the fact that Twitter’s penetration kept increasing over the months that followed the revolutions makes it a significant tool for political campaigns. Drawing on my PhD research, this paper will highlight the way political officials, such as candidates of the 2012 Egyptian presidential campaign, applied Twitter to promote their political programme. I will examine this set of tweets in relation with the way activists and national bloggers have been reporting the 2012-2013 Egyptian crisis. Furthermore, I will address the contribution of Twitter in the presidential campaign, comparing it with other communication devices and campaigning strategies.
