Parchment in Byzantine Manuscripts of the 11th and 12th Centuries: Characteristics and UseAs one could assume, from the Middle Ages to the present most manuscripts have disappeared. But even so, hundreds of thousands have survived. And you will be wondering that if so many of them have survived, how is it so difficult to find them? The answer lies in the definition of manuscript that we met in a previous segment: manuscripts are very valuable objects, but also they are compact and easy to transport. As a matter of fact, during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance manuscripts were considered very convenient objects to present to popes, emperors, and kings; and after that, they have been the object of desire for many rich collectors. For both reasons, many manuscripts have ended up in countries very distant to their birth land. On the other hand, although manuscripts can endure the pass of time much better than many other objects, they must be dealt with as the precious objects they are. They must be preserved from sudden changes in temperature and moisture, and of course kept safe from burglary and vandalism, and that requires very costly facilities, and their cataloguing and handling are entrusted to curators-librarians with very special training. None of all that is affordable to small libraries, nor to the most recent ones, no matter what size they can be. Because basically one can state that the presence of manuscripts in any given library depends on its history.

The conservation of a Byzantine Manuscript from the Public Library of Lixouri, Kefalonia2016 •
The paper explores the potentiality of an experimental multianalytic protocol with appropriate methodology for determining the chemical and morphostructural characteristics of two old documents on parchment support. Such a protocol can authenticate and assess the state of conservation under the influence of environmental factors during storage and archival documentation, thus advancing preventive and prophylactic measures in “treasure” deposits such as the National Archives of Romania, where these documents are kept. The work methodology consisted of three stages. The first stage consists of visual observation for identifying deteriorations and degradations, alongside the selection of representatives’ areas from where micro-samples were collected. The second stage involves Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled by Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (SEM-EDX) analysis, for highlighting the morphology and determining the elemental composition; lastly, the Fourier-transform infrared (F...
The article presents the Henrike Lähnemann's Inaugural Lecture for the Chair in German Medieval Literature and Linguistics, delivered on Thursday 21 January 2016. The subject of the lecture is a new acquisition by the Bodleian Library in Oxford, a psalter written ca. 1500 by the nun Margaret Hopes in the Cistercian convent of Medingen near Lüneburg, MS. Don. e. 248. The hypothesis advanced is that the nuns use the materiality of their prayer-book as the embodiment of their devotion. The psalter is analysed in terms of its physical realization (material, layout, writing, corrections, music, illustrations, and additions) and its execution interpreted as a spiritual act. The journey of the manuscript beyond the Middle Ages is highlighted through the accommodation of the manuscript to the Lutheran Reformation and the addition of a bone plaque with a floral border in the nineteenth century, reflecting the contemporary concept of the medieval object. The purpose of the lecture is an enquiry into the changing history of manuscripts as objects of devotional, antiquarian and scholarly interest.

The Vienna Genesis: An Example of Late Antique Purple ParchmentThe investigation and conservation of the Vienna Genesis, a Late Antique manuscript on purple parchment, included the study of parchment production and purple dyeing in the sixth century. The process of parchment making and of purple dyeing was recreated and compared with the Vienna Genesis and other manuscripts from the sixth and eighth centuries. Parchment made from the hides of young lambs and dyed with orchil resembled the folios of the Vienna Genesis. The results of material analysis and the study of parchment technology influenced decisions for the conservation and storage of the manuscript. Fragile areas of ink and parchment were stabilised with strips of adhesive coated Japanese tissue paper. The single folios are stored in folders of Japanese paper and museum matboard within a sink mat.
