Abstract While the programming languages course played a key role in Curricula'68,'78, and'91, Curriculum 2001 replaced most of the content in programming languages with sections on learning to program. We argue that the need for a programming languages course has not diminished, but instead increased, especially as we move into an era of many-core computing.

Abstract Computer science is necessary but not sufficient to understand and overcome the problems we face in software engineering. We need to understand not only the properties of the software itself, but also the limitations and competences humans bring to the engineering task. Rather than rely on commonsense notions, we need a deep and nuanced view of human capabilities in order to determine how to enhance them.

Computer programming:  A computer works by executing a set of instructions known as a program.  The term programming refers to the process of developing computer instructions (programs) to solve a particular task. It involves use of special characters, signs and symbols found in a particular programming language to create computer instructions.  A programming language is a special set of symbols that can be translated into machine readable form by the computer when arranged in a particular sequence or order. Each language has a special sequence or order of writing characters usually referred to as the syntax.
