At the state level, intelligence may help to save lives; at the international, it can provide, or be used to provide, the pretext to go to war, and hence cost lives (Gill & Phythian, 2006, p. 172). The events of the past decades – 9/11, Iraq 2003 and, most recently, the 7/7 bombings in London – indicate that intelligence structures and processes are still not error-free. Historically, intelligence has been subject to a particular group of insiders, and there is no denying that much intelligence work must take place in secret if it is to be of value. However, intelligence is too significant to be left to the spooks. Therefore this essay will analyze the importance of intelligence to International Security

Despite a wealth of typological works on head-marking (indexing) and dependent-marking (flagging) in the past several decades, relatively little is known about the patterns of interaction of these two main systems of morphological marking of predicate-argument relations. Do languages with rich head-marking disfavour nominal case and tend to lack flagging of core arguments? Are verbal pronominal indexes in head-marking languages always functional equivalents of nominal cases in dependent-marking languages? Which patterns of double or “bilocal” marking of participants exist in the languages of the world and which factors favour resp. constrain them? These and similar questions, including methodological ones, are the focus of my long-term typological project, and in my talk I shall address them on the basis of a convenience sample of ca. 175 languages from all over the world.
