As one of the most influential and widely used family therapy models, structural family therapy (SFT) grew out of a perceived need for an alternative to traditional psychoanalytical counseling models. With a definitive move away from an individual foci and a move towards a focus on the critical structural and functional aspects of family operations, SFT has been successfully used for over five decades in addressing some of the most challenging, multidimensional family issues encountered in the therapeutic setting. This paper attempts to describe the SFT model and apply it to a fictional family case. We will begin with an examination of the development, history and principles of SFT, including a look at the founding theorists, the role of the therapist, and the theory of change within the context of the SFT model and the various strategies and interventions utilized within the model. Our model will then be discussed within the context of our fictional family case in an attempt to demonstrate the effective application of the model and its interventions in achieving the goal of promoting health family functioning
