2007, The Multicolored Landscape of Compact Objects and Their Explosive Origins(Cefalu 2006- Week One)(AIP Conference Proceedings Volume 924)
Abstract. The gravitational wave detector VIRGO is in the final commissioning phase and some preliminary data has already been acquired. The aim of VIRGO is to directly detect gravitational waves emitted by compact objects at the time of coalescence and by other astrophysical sources. Here we report on the present sensitivity for detecting these sources and what we Will achieve in the near future. We also discuss some details of our data analysis methods and we show some preliminary results related to the fraction of the ...
The Virgo detector, based at the EGO (European Gravitational Observatory) and located in Cascina (Pisa), played a significant role in the development of the gravitational-wave astronomy. From its first scientific run in 2007, the Virgo detector has constantly been upgraded over the years; since 2017, with the Advanced Virgo project, the detector reached a high sensitivity that allowed the detection of several classes of sources and to investigate new physics. This work reports the main hardware upgrades of the detector and the main astrophysical results from the latest five years; future prospects for the Virgo detector are also presented.

Status of Advanced VirgoThe LIGO and the Virgo collaborations have recently announced the first detections of Gravitational Waves. Due to their weak amplitude, Gravitational Waves are expected to produce a very small effect on free-falling masses, which undergo a displacement of the order of 10-18 m for a Km-scale mutual distance. This discovery showed that interferometric detectors are suitable to reveal such a feeble effect, and therefore represent a new tool for astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology in the understanding of the Universe. To better reconstruct the position of the Gravitational Wave source and increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the events by means of multiple coincidence, a network of detectors is necessary. In the USA, the LIGO project has recently concluded its second Observation Run (O2) with a couple of twin 4 kilometer-long arms detectors which are placed in Washington State and Louisiana. Advanced VIRGO (AdV) is a 3 kilometer-long arms second generation interferometer situated in ...

Astrophysically triggered searches for gravitational waves: status and prospects2008 •
Coalescing binaries, supernovae, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) and other transient sources are not only interesting candidates for gravitational-wave (GW) searches but may also be observed by other means, such as gamma-rays, x-rays, visible light and neutrinos. Therefore GW searches can take advantage of the astrophysical events detected by such independent observatories. Correlation in time (and direction when available) between candidate events in the LIGO/Virgo detectors [1, 2] and ...

Gravitational wave burst search in the Virgo C7 data2009 •
A search for gravitational wave burst events has been performed with the Virgo C7 commissioning run data that have been acquired in September 2005 over 5 days. It focused on unmodeled short duration signals in the frequency range 150 Hz to 2 kHz. A search aimed at detecting the GW emission from the merger and ring-down phases of binary black hole coalescences was also carried out. An extensive understanding of the data was required to be able to handle a burst search using the output of only one detector. A 90% ...

VIRGO is a gravitational wave detector based on a Michelson interferometer with 3 km long arms. The aim of the experiment is the first detection of gravitational waves emitted by compact stellar objects such as neutron stars, black holes or supernova. The detector is being built near Pisa (Italy) by a French–Italian collaboration funded by INFN in Italy and CNRS in France. The test of the central part of the interferometer have been performed successfully this year. Civil engineering has also been completed this year and the detector final assembly will be finished early next year. The main scientific goals and detector issues are introduced. Some of the control and stabilization systems used to operate the interferometer are also discussed. Recent results and present status are presented. 1 SCIENTIFIC MOTIVATIONS Gravitational waves [1] are predicted by Einstein general relativity theory. According to Einstein theory, the gravitational force is a manifestation of space-time curvatu...

Emiria Sunassa's Citational Paintings: 'Like a Boil on a Virgin's Lips'2023 •
The artist Emiria Sunassa (1894–1964) holds a doubly significant place in histories of Southeast Asia’s modern art: first, for having been a stylistically distinctive and active member of the pioneering modernist collective in Indonesia called Persagi, and secondly, for having been one of the only women anywhere in the region to be recognised as a professionally exhibiting artist during the 1940s. Her profile is currently rising due to growing interest among museums and curators. Studies have focused, however, on Emiria’s biography, including her gender, her anticolonial activism, and her claims to royal lineage, rather than on her artworks themselves. In this essay, I offer a different approach, based on close observations of Emiria’s paintings and related visual archives. Drawing on previously overlooked archival materials relating to two paintings from the 1940s, titled Pucuk Layu (Wilting Stamen) and Tari Kebyar (Balinese Dancer), I show that both works were painted in direct response to contemporaneous photographs made by the Russian-born German artist Walter Spies (1895–1942) in Bali. The paintings both rely on and defy these photographic sources. I propose the term citational paintings to describe these works, which I argue embody a transmedial reflexivity and provide valuable insights into their art-historical context.
