factorial. La emergencia a los 2 meses fue de 27.19 % (20 301 plántulas por hectárea), con diferencias para el testigo de 29.77 %;
para la densidad 88 árboles, con 35.15 %; y para la interacción 88 árboles-testigo, con 41.5 % de emergencia. Hubo diferencias

Abstract
The lack of regenerating practices in the wooded area under forest management of Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro, Michoacán,
Mexico allowed the development of this study whith the following objective: to describe the induced regeneration of Pinus pseudostrobus
in response to tree densities and differing site conditioning practices. The methodology consisted of the selection of 6 stands, the
election of 6 tree densities, the establishment of 72 sites, site conditioning treatments (burning, cleaning, fallow and control), sowing of
420 seeds per site and factorial variance analysis. From the obtained results the following comes off: plant emergence after 2 months
of applying the four and six treatments was 27.19 % (20 301 seedling h-1), differing from the control (29.77 %), from the 88-tree density
(35.15 %) and 88-tree density interaction with the control (41.5 %). By the 5th and the 8th month period there were differences among
treatments, with over 60 % survival for the fallow and the cleaning practices. The 88-tree and 140-tree interactions with fallow and
cleaning showed 70 % and 90 % survival for that period, respectively. From the 5th month to the 11th month period there was a drastic
mortality of over 70 % plants. In regard to plant height within the four and six treatments, differences were observed in the 5th and
the 8thmonth period, with greatest plant height detected within the control and the cleaning practices, while the 0-tree density was
superior to all treatments during the whole lapse of time.

Introducción
Introduction
Currently one of the major problems posed by forests today
is the viability of natural regeneration. It is now clear that
population pressures and the need to produce more food
have caused considerable disturbance on these ecosystems
(Varela, 1998). On the face of this problem, it is essential to
know the state that some ecologically or economically important
Pinus species keep (Perry, 1991; Farjon and Styles, 1997).
Since many of its forests are being used at different intensities,
and managed on a larger scale, it is necessary to know the
regenerative aspects thereof.
A universal characteristic of every ecosystem is the continuous
change to which it is subject, so that their condition at present
is the result of a regular process of modifications occurred in the
past, which can be very diverse: variations in population
size, replacement of some species by others, altered micro and
macro climate, presence of herbivores or disturbance factors
that drastically impact forest ecosystems. It is worth noting that these
changes are interrelated, and result in complex ecological
interactions in time and space.
Attention should be paid, in particular, to the special conditions of
use and extensive harvest, since forest regeneration is performed
in complex ways. This process may take different degrees of
continuity, which, in turn, is controlled by constraints related to a
source of viable seed, a good seed bed and a microenvironment
compatible with the development of new individuals (Roe et al.,
1970). The latter is regulated by the upper canopy formed by the
crowns of the dominant trees, other species of the vegetation and
forest floor characteristics (Heiligmann and Schneider, 1975;
dominantes, por otras especies de la vegetación presente;
Knowledge of the factors that they comprise predicts the
behavior of natural reforestation in relation to germination,
establishment and possible causes of mortality and survival of
the species (Musálem et al., 1991).
Currently, little is known about the complexity of regenerative
processes in markets dominated by Pinus pseudostrobus Lindl., a
widespread species in Mexico, with high commercial value
and subject to large-scale use (Perry, 1991; López-Upton,
2002; Sáenz-Romero and Linding-Cisneros, 2004).
The conventional way to create the conditions conducive
to forest recovery is through regeneration cuttings with
modifications of the seed bed, which include decreasing the
vegetation and debris from logging (Shelton and Wittwer,
1991). Since some aspects of optimal densities of trees and
the influence these have on regeneration, as well as site
conditioning activities in different residual density conditions
are unknown, this study aimed to determine the effects the
different conditions of light, temperature and humidity created
escala (Perry, 1991; López-Upton, 2002; Sáenz-Romero y
Linding-Cisneros, 2004).

by the release on both the canopy and soil in seed germination
and seedling establishment of Pinus pseudostrobus.
Materials and Methods
Six mature stands of Pinus pseudostrobus were chosen in forests
under forest management; with six different densities of trees; within
them three experimental units of 50 x 50 m (2 500 m2 each)
were established, for a total of 18. The experiment comprised six
tree density treatments: 0, 21, 61, 88, 140 and 330 trees ha -1
with three replications each, under the experimental design of
randomized blocks, in a total area of 4.5 ha.
For sampling of the induced regeneration, four 7.5 x 7.5 m squares
sites (56.25 m2) were established within each experimental unit,
where four soil treatments were implemented: burning, removal
of vegetation (cleaning), fallow and control. The activities
were performed manually with field tools (machete, hoe,
shovel, pick), wheelbarrow to extract herbaceous and shrub
vegetation in the sites clean and fallow, in addition to the
removal of soil; in the case of burning, vegetation was removed by
controlled burning; in the control site, soil and vegetation were
left untouched.

sitios de limpia y de barbecho, además de la remoción de suelo;
The P. pseudostrobus seeds from the Forest Technical Direction
of the Nuevo San Juan Nuevo Prangaricutiro Indigenous
Community, Michoacán State, were collected a year before in
the forests of the community and treated for their conservation. Their
viability was determined by in vitro germination tests, for which
400 seeds were put into Petri boxes (four subsamples of 100
seeds each), at room temperature for 15 days. The average
germinated seeds was 95 %.

Regeneration was assessed by direct sowing of 420 seeds
per site (74 666 seeds ha-1/ 2.497) (Barnet and Baker, 1991),
with a separation among them of 36 cm and at 1 cm deep.
For their observation, monitoring and evaluation, small wooden
poles were placed in order to locate each seed and seedling
resulting from emergence.
The establishment of the sites was made in January and
February 1995; the treatments to the soil were applied in

first measurement of emergence and survival was made in
July 1996.
Numerical data were obtained in regard to: a) emergence
during the first two months; b) number of plants registered at
2, 5, 8, 11, 15 and 21 months; c) survival at the age 5, 8, 11,
15 and 21 months; d) height (cm) of seedlings at age 2, 5,
8, 11, 15 and 21 months, in response to the factors of the site
conditioning practices and tree density.
For the analysis of variance it was necessary to make an
arcsen transformation of the emergence percentages and
seedling survival. With these transformed data, a factorial
analysis of variance for each age, completed with the multiple
range test with the Newman-Keuls procedure, with 95 % of
significant minimal difference, to prove the null hypothesis that all
the possible couples of means of the treatments are the same,
as well as to know simultaneously the effects of tree densities and
the treatments for site preparation.
Statgraphic Plus statistical software (2002) was used with
a factorial arrangement A x B. The factors and variables
considered were: a) conditioning of site with four levels: 1 (Control),
2 (Burns), 3 (Fallow) and 4 (Cleaner); b) density of trees with
six levels: 1 (330 trees ha-1), 2 (140), 3 (88), 4 (61) 5 (21) 6 (0)
with three replicates per treatment, corresponding the three plots.
The variables considered were: 1) Emergency (%); 2) Seedling
survival (%); 3) Seedling height (cm).

(20 301 seedlings ha-1). Analysis of variance showed significant
effects of site conditioning factor (A) (F = 3 .094, P = 0.0355),
tree density (B) (F = 5.666, P = 0.0003), and the interaction
AB Emergence (F = 1.491, P = 0.1468). As for the levels of site
conditioning work factor, control had the highest percentage of
seedlings with 29.77 % (22 228 ha-1); followed by clearance,
with 29.12 % (21 742 ha-1); fallow, with 26.97 % (20 137 ha-1),
and burning, with 22.91 % (17 105 ha-1). The density 88 had
the highest number of seedlings, with 35.15 % (26 245 ha-1);
followed densities of 330 and 0, with 29.92 and 28.80 %
respectively (22 340 and 21 503 ha-1); while densities 140, 21,
and 61 recorded the lowest percentages of seedlings, 25.29,
22.57 and 21.40 %, respectively (18 883, 16 852 and 15 978 ha-1).
arreglo factorial A X B. Los factores y variables consideradas

(18 883, 16 852 y 15 978 ha-1).
The significant interaction puts in evidence that levels of
factor A are dependent on factor B: Control interactions with
88 trees = 41.50 % seedlings (30 985 ha-1), control with 330
trees = 39 % (29 118 ha-1) and control and clearance with
0 trees = 35 % respectively (26 132 ha-1) had the best rates of
emergence (Figure 1 and Table 1).
Survival
Five months. An average survival of 70.93 % (14 399 seedlings ha-1)
was observed when considering all levels of both factors
(AXB). Results show that there is a significant effect of the
studied variables: site conditioning practices (A) (F = 11.62,
P = 0.0000), tree density (B) (F = 2.45, P = 0.0468), and the
interaction between them (AB) (F = 1.94, P = 0.0422). For the site
conditioning treatments, fallow recorded the highest survival
with 83. 52 % (16 955 seedlings ha-1); followed by clearance, with
76.11 (15 451 seedlings ha-1); and burning, with 62.71 %
The per cent average is recorded as well as the standard errors for each treatment.

Supervivencia
Cinco meses.
In regard to tree density, the treatment of 21 trees ha-1
recorded 78.46 % survival; 0, 75.68 % and 140, 74.63 %,
(15 928, 15 363 and 15 150 seedlings ha-1); while 88 and 61
trees ha -1 were 67.06, 64.91 and 64.84 %, respectively
(13 613, 13 177 and 13 163 seedlings ha-1). The significant
interaction points out that the levels of the A factor depend on
the B factor: the fallow interactions with 88 trees and clearance
with 140 trees had the best results, with 90 % survival (18 270
seedlings ha-1) (Table 3).

Eight months. Survival declined 18.32 %, with respect to the fifth
month, with an average survival of 52.55 % (10 668 seedlings ha-1).
Results prove a significant effect of the site conditioning practices
factor (A) (F = 10.03, P = 0.0000), tree density (B) (F = 5.30,
P = 0.0006) of the interaction between them (AB) (F = 3.04,
P = 0.0017). From the A factor treatments, clearance showed the
highest survival percentage, 62.89 % (12 767 seedlings ha-1), followed
by fallow, 60.19 % (12 219 seedlings ha-1) and burning 45.21 %
(9 178 seedlings ha-1). Control was the treatment with the least

For the B factor levels, there was a global survival decline of
18.38 % in relation to the fifth month, with 52.55 % average
(10 668 seedlings ha-1). The 140 and 330 densities had
the greatest survival percent, with 67.26 % and 57.99 %
(13 654 and 11 772 seedlings ha-1), followed by the 0, 88 and 61
densities with 51.50, 50.96 and 48.04 %, respectively (10 455,
10 345 and 9 752 seedlings ha-1). The 21 trees ha-1 density
had the least seedling survival, 39.56 % (8 031 seedlings ha-1). The
AB interaction results demonstrate that the effects from the A
factor are dependent on the factor B levels. The comparisons
of the means of the treatments of clearance and fallow, both
with 140 trees, showed the greatest survival percentages 90
and 77.39 %, respectively (18 270 and 15 710 seedlings ha-1)
(Table 5).

74.63 %, respectivamente (15 928, 15 363 y 15 150 plántulas ha-1);

con 67.26 % y 57.99 % (13 654 y 11 772 plántulas ha-1);
(Cuadro 5).
11 months. During this period, survival declined 27.27 %,
compared to the eighth month, 25.28 % (5 132 seedlings ha-1). The
ANOVA results indicate that there are non- significant effects of
the site conditioning factor (A) (P ≥ 0.05), tree density (B)
(P ≥ 0.05), or of the interaction between them (AB) (P ≥ 0.05).
15 months. Survival lowered 3.8 % compared to the eleventh
month, for a 21.48 % (4 360 seedlings ha-1) average. The effects
of the factors of site conditioning (A) (P ≥ 0.05), tree density (B)
(P ≥0.05) and interaction between both (AB) (P ≥ 0.05) were
non- significant.
21 months. Survival was 3.82 % below in regard to the fifth
month, for a 17.66 % (3 585 seedlings ha-1) average; there are
non-significant effects of the factors of site conditioning (A)

were significant differences between the treatments of the A,
B factors and the AB interaction, while in the 11, 15 and 21
times, there were not observed significant effects of the A B
factors or the AB interaction (figures 2 and 3).

Growth
Two months. A 2.37 cm average height was observed. There
were significant effects of the A factor (F = 19.82, P = 0.0000)
and of the B factor (F = 4.97, P = 0.0010) and not of the AB
interaction (P ≥ 0.05).

Discussion
Influence of the treatments of site conditioning
Emergence and survival. The seedlings sawn under the four
states of site conditioning had different emergence responses.
From the total number, 72.81 % did not emerge, or even
showed a dormancy state, which is attributed to water and gas
impermeability, mechanical resistance to growth of the embryo,
selective permeability to growth regulators, metabolic blockings,
inhibitory presence, primitive embryos and to the acquirement
of inhibitory mechanisms (Taylorson and Hendricks, 1977).
P = 0.6926): 0 árboles ha-1 = 19.48 cm; 21 árboles = 17.00 cm;
140 árboles = 15.82; 88 árboles = 12.61 cm; 61 árboles = 11.86 cm
y 330 árboles = 10.61 cm, no así del factor A (P ≥ 0.05) ni de
la interacción AB (P ≥ 0.05).
The elapsed time between sawing and the emergence of
seedlings was 2 to 5 months; this rather long permanence could
have caused that many of them were eaten by animals (mainly
rodents), attacked by insects, diseases, ground organisms or
easily decomposed; it is not frequent that these seeds are
found in the seed banks in a very long latent state (Musálem,
1984; Smith, 1986).
The nature of the seeding bed, the moist mineral soil and the
vegetation play an important role in germination. Saksa (1994)
highlights the need to prepare the ground to put the seed in
touch with the mineral soil and obliterate competence; in this
sense, results show that control and clearance had the highest
emergence percentages in regard to the other treatments
(fallow and burning). Pomeroy (1949) states that the germination of
Pinus taeda L. seed depends on its ability to absorb enough
moisture from the substrate, so that germination is faster; herbs
and shrubs allowed to satisfy these requirements as well as to
provide them temporary protection (Spurr and Barnes, 1982).
mecanismos inhibidores (Taylorson y Hendricks, 1977).

Figure 4. Average height of Pinus pseudostrobus Lindl. seedlings under six tree densities.
The presence of some amount of litter and enough organic
matter that includes mineral soil, also allowed seeds and
seedlings shelter against direct sunlight, which attenuated soil
temperature since without them severe temperature variations
and the resulting seedling mortality (Musálem et al., 1991).
This protecting effect of the seedlings during the experiment
were provided by the 88 and 330 tree densities interacting with
control, with 41.5 and 39 % emergence in the first two months.
The emergence process is affected by many factors; it would
take a light position if it is attributed to the tree density, to the
site conditioning as well as to the effects of these practices upon
the ground over the seedbed from different viewpoints:
biological (pathogens, consumers), chemical (pH, nutrients),
environmental (humidity, light, temperature) and of the physical
structure of soil, mainly depth and composition) (Shelton and
Wittwer, 1991).
During the first five months of life of the seedlings, the
highest survival was observed in fallow soil with 83.52 %, with
significant differences between treatments (clearance, burning
and control). Seedlings at this stage required a loose soil, whose
main purpose was to improve drainage and moisture retention
(Derr and Mann, 1977). With this practice and a sufficient
supply of moisture (during the rainy season), the seedlings
had favorable conditions for their survival and development.
Moreover, removal (fallow) helped to avoid soil compaction.

There is evidence to indicate that a compacted soil, despite
a plentiful supply of seeds, not have high germination and
seedling survival (Chacón, 1993). In very remote cases where
these events occurred, there has been high production of toxins
with oxygen shortage, in which the decomposition of organic waste
are different from those that occur in loose and aerated soils
(Daubenmire, 1979).
El proceso de emergencia es afectado por muchos factores;
de arbolado, a las condiciones de preparación de sitio;
y Wittwer, 1991).
The seedlings in soils that underwent clearance also had
high survival during the first five months (76.11 %), and was highly
significant compared to the other treatments (burning 62.71 %
and control, 61.39 %).
The removed vegetation consisted of grasses, ferns, herbs
and woody shrubs. Wastes included stumps, branches, dry
cones, fallen leaves and other plant debris in various stages of
decomposition. It has been shown that if the amount of these
and vegetation is small and well distributed in the soil, it benefits
survival as moist microsites are created, and well protected
from the damages that animals can cause; but, on the other
hand, if they are abundant, they prevent establishment of
plants which become buried or crushed. Its rate of decomposition is
also an important factor determining the delay of regeneration
(Minore et al., 1984; Shelton and Wittwer, 1991).
aireados (Daubenmire, 1979).
In the study sites the presence of mosses of the genus
Polytrichum was observed, which provide good conditions for
regeneration, since the seeds are easily seep through them,
which allows the roots of the pine seedlings to get in touch with
mineral soil. Hardly lethal temperatures are recorded by these
plants as they reflect substantial amounts of infrared radiation,
and their irregular surface promotes heat loss. Also, they do
not compete for moisture and nutrients, as they are obtained
directly from the air and dust (Smith, 1951). The opposite occurs
with grasses and shrubs, which are well adapted to invade the
space freed by cuttings; and although they can be useful to
protect pine seedlings in the emergence stage, it also represents
the long, strong competition for moisture, light, nutrients and
1984; Shelton y Wittwer, 1991).
The presence of ferns, particularly Pteridium aquilinum (L.)
Kunth in the sites is important because they are competitive and
unpalatable organisms which contain chemicals that act as defenses
against insects and have a significant capacity to sprout
(Ferguson and Boyd, 1988). Phytotoxic effects of humus and litter
coming from these plants inhibit the germination and establishment
of pine seedlings until they are absolutely eliminated (Dolling, 1996).
organismos proveen buenas condiciones para la regeneración;
During the intermediate stages in the development of the
seedlings (8 to 11 months), the highest mortality (45.59 %) was
observed. The climatic influence (temperature and humidity)
during that time probably was one of the most important
causes. In this period the months with the lowest temperatures
(= 13 °C in January and February = 13.3 °C), and the highest in the
year (March = 16.1 °C and April = 17.2 °C) were registered and in
both the less rainy months (January and April = 10.6 mm = 4.6 mm)
were recorded as well; such conditions could have an effect
on the development of seedlings. Marroquín et al. (2007) note
that the lack of natural and artificial regeneration of Pinus
pseudostrobus in Nuevo León is attributed to the low and
irregular rainfall, plus the high temperatures which could also
delay germination or inhibit development and cause the death
of seedling from burns or drought, while low temperatures
caused their expulsion (Noble and Alexander, 1977).
competitivos y poco palatales, presentan defensas químicas frente
Specimens from soils undergoing clean and fallow during the
first eight months of life showed the best survival rates and
number of seedlings per hectare (62.89 % = 4 082 seedlings ha-1
and 60.19 % = 3 749 seedlings ha-1, respectively) compared
with the treatment of burns (45.25 % = 3 424 seedlings ha-1)
and the control (41.91 % = 3 083 seedlings ha-1). During the final
phase of the study (21 months), survival showed no changes,
for individuals undergoing clearance soil and fallow maintained
a high density of seedlings survival and ha-1; while those
established in soils subjected to burning, had lower values in
this regard.
de menor precipitación (enero = 10.6 mm y abril = 4.6 mm);
In theory the partial burning well implemented on light soils
(2.5 cm deep, approximately) (Roger and Seidel, 1965), can be
used in any method of regeneration. The direct effects of burning
over organic matter and the heating that occurs in the upper
layers, together with the compaction by rain, caused
a decrease in the degree of penetration of water, for the
same combustion favored mulch and death countless seedlings
(Tarrant, 1956; Boggs, 1991).
Bare mineral soil (fallow and clearance) were good seed
beds during the seedling stage (5 and 8 months old), even
though it is important to prevent the occurrence of extremes of
light, temperature and humidity, by a protective canopy, such as that
provided by 88 and 140 trees ha-1 densities. Statistical analyzes
are consistent with these results, with average rates of 90 %
(5th month) to 77 and 90 % (8th month) survival of seedlings
in fallow / interactions 88 trees ha-1, fallow / 140 trees ha-1
clearance/140 trees ha-1.

Liming (1945) observed a better establishment and increased
survival of seedlings under a 75 % coverage of the upper stratum
in Pinus echinata Mill. In a similar way, Velázquez and
Musálem (1986) in Pinus hartwegii Lindl. and Musálem
(1984) in Pinus montezumae Lamb. documented survival rates
in open canopies. There is evidence that in the light intensity
of approximately 50 % or less shade there was a higher
percentage of germination (Strothman, 1972).
It should be noted that the influence of the different
densities for emergence worsened in the 2 to 5 months old
seedlings; thus, there are significant differences between the
variables emergence number and 88, 140 and 330 trees ha-1
densities. The pattern that followed the emergence and survival
was that of higher values in the densities has 88 trees ha-1
density (emergence) and 140 trees ha-1 (survival) Therefore, the
initial degree of germination and survival dependent on light quality.
Direct light reaching the forest floor through the canopy
openings is unchanged. The diffuse light that carries the soil
is relatively rich in blue waves. The filtered or transmitted in
the area of full or semi-full shade light is low in blue and red
waves (the most effective for photosynthesis) and very rich in
infrared which can be very harmful for germination, survival
and growth (Oriandni and Buland, 1972; Harrington, 1977).
This lighting condition is strongly linked to the prevailing weather
conditions in the study area (January-April), the consequence
of which for the 8-11 months period was a drastic mortality,
74.72 %, especially in low- and intermediate tree densities
(21, 61 and 88 trees ha-1). In this term, temperature and humidity
were adverse, with a combination of very low (January and
February) to very high temperatures in the year (March-April),
both with the months of lowest rainfall (January to April).
Growth. Plants require optimum illumination to grow; however,
from the conditions of forest management within the study
area, the seedlings varied widely in their ability to grow under
varying degrees of shade (tolerance), so that at lower density
and degrees of coverage seedlings became taller, as it was
noted in the 0 and 21 trees ha-1 densities. There is evidence
that the development of pine seedlings roots and the height they
reach is reduced, if they grow in low light levels, regardless of
their tolerance (Baker, 1945).
germinación, supervivencia y crecimiento (Oriandni y Buland,
1972, Harrington, 1977).
The average heights in each evaluation period were
dissimilar in different densities. The 61, 88 and 330 trees ha-1
showed the largest increase during May to September,
while 0, 21 and 140 trees ha-1 recorded as such from
September to March. These figures were verified in much
of spring and summer, with temperatures in the months of
March to June as the highest in the year, while from July to
September they were intermediate, but accompanied by
the wettest months. The combination of these factors (light
intensities reflected by the different densities of trees; humidity
and temperature), probably led to a suitable medium for the
height of these plants. Throughout the study, it was observed that
under the intermediate cover (61 and 88 trees ha-1), the
seedlings reached very similar average heights. The findings
in this regard were consistent with what some authors have
reported on studies of height growth of natural regeneration in
various species under different densities and higher canopy
cover (Musálem, 1984; Velásquez et al., 1985). Meanwhile the
average height of seedlings at 330 trees ha-1 density during
the period was lower than developed under the other densities.
These results agree with those of Boyer (1963) who noted that
as the tree cover increases, the growth of plants is deleted,
which result as individuals of different sizes. McDonald (1976)
proved that with the application of the different regeneration
cutting methods, the growth of seedlings becomes greater as
the cuttings were more intense.
Crecimiento.
densidades y coberturas de dosel superior (Musálem, 1984;
Conclusions
In the intermediate density of trees (88 trees ha-1) increased
seedling emergence of more than 34% occurred, for which the
application of any site preparation treatment was unnecessary
during this stage. With activities of clearance and fallow, a
survival of 60% in the 5th and 8th month of life of the plant
was obtained. 88 and 140 trees ha-1 Interactions with the activities
listed above showed a survival of 70 to 90%, particularly in the
ages of 5 and 8 months. The height of the seedlings was best
in density 0 trees ha-1, whereas the 330 trees ha-1 significantly
affected their development. There is a drastic seedling mortality from
5 to 11 months old over 70%, with a survival curve of negative
exponential type with a tendency to stabilize in the month 15.
The highest mortality percentage of Pinus pseudostrobus took
place from March to June, which coincides with the hottest
time of the year. The most outstanding heights reached by the
studied species were recorded in spring and summer, when
temperatures and rainfall were the highest in the year.
