Identifying semantic expressions (so-called concept strings (CSs)) in multilingual corpora is an important NLP task, as it allows web search engines to define and perform semantic queries over large collection of documents. Existing web search engines in the legal domain are mainly limited to keyword search, in which the query word is matched against the textual content of the documents. This paper presents a novel framework named the Concept Strings Framework that makes use of CSs for representing the content of the documents, and for allowing semantic search over them. These CSs can consist of individual knowledge base (KB) concepts (e.g. WordNet concepts) or combination of them. In addition, this paper presents an interactive web-based toolkit, called the Template Editor that enables the creation, editing and evaluation of CSs. Experiments on two publicly available legislation websites show satisfactory results.

Today, search engines for legal information retrieval do not include legal knowledge into their search strategies. These strategies include keyword and metadata search, but do not address the semantics of the keywords, which would allow, for instance, conceptual query expansion. In other words, there is no semantic relationship between information needs of the user and the information content of documents apart from text pattern matching.

Abstract. Intelligent text information retrieval systems need the capability to deal with the semantics of the content of their text bases. In order to satisfy this requisite it is necessary to extract semantic information from the documents and to be able to make inferences about ...

Self-compassion has three important components of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness, which may help people through hardships. Few studies have reported how temperament or lifestyle habits affect self-compassion in individuals. Therefore, we investigated the effects of temperament and lifestyle habits on self-compassion using a dataset of 130 apparently healthy participants. Multiple regression analyses using the stepwise method were conducted for the total self-compassion scale (SCS) scores as the dependent variable, with age, sex, education, five temperaments (depressive, cyclothymic, irritable, anxious, and hyperthymic temperaments) scores, and weekly hours for four lifestyle habits (physical exercise, music listening, reading, and meditation) as independent variables. Self-compassion, measured by SCS scores, was significantly and positively associated with reading habit, and significantly and negatively associated with depressive temperament. The present findings suggest a possibility that self-compassion may be decreased by depressive temperament, but increased by reading habit. Therefore, reading habit may be one of useful strategies for protecting mental health via increasing self-compassion particularly in people with depressive temperament. Nonetheless, this is a cross-sectional study and further studies are required to investigate the causal relationship.
The Israel Science Foundation sponsored research project Contending with Crises: The Jews in XIV th Century Europe at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the direction of Prof. Elisheva Baumgarten is offering short term (1-2 months) visiting fellowships for Ph.D. students in the fields of History, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, Literature, or Art History and for Postdocs in these fields, starting in October 2024. Successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend depending on their status (PhD or postdoc) as well as some travel funds if they come from abroad. They will be given offices at the Hebrew University (Mount Scopus campus), and will expected to be present at least two days a week during their period of fellowship. They will take part in a group enterprise of creating a history of Jewish life in Europe during the XIV th century with an emphasis on challenges Jews faced as part of the centuries' crises including expulsion, migration, persecution, and plague but also return to previous homes after displacement, cultural production, changing and continuing social structures. Work on any geographic area in Europe is relevant for this project. They will participate in the project's seminar, research trips, conferences and its other activities.
