The European Construction Sector Observatory outlined that green building envelopes as green roofs and walls contribute to the reduction of energy demand and CO2 emissions due to the air conditioning in summer periods, and the mitigation of heat islands in urban areas. For this reason, the understanding about the contribution of urban greening infrastructures on buildings to sustainable energy use for air conditioning is urgent. This paper focuses on the analysis of a vertical surface provided with a Parthenocissus quinquefolia (L.) Planch., a winter deciduous species, as green cover of a building, assessing the reduction of the solar radiation energy absorbed by the façade and, consequently, the heat flux (HF) transmitted into the internal ambient. This research shows that, in July, surface temperatures (STs) on the vegetated façade were up to 13 °C lower than on the unvegetated (bare) façade. Under the climate and environmental conditions of the green wall located at ENEA Casaccia...

The usage of the vegetated green systems and their impact on the thermal efficiency of residential buildingsJournal of Agricultural Engineering
A nature-based system for improving Mediterranean buildings’ performance: contribution to energy saving by heat transfer reduction and influence of climatic parametersUrban environments can be turned greener and more sustainable by letting in vegetation. The application of green façades on buildings’ vertical surfaces is a viable option that brings various advantages. This study focuses on the energy benefit provided by an evergreen green façade in Mediterranean climate conditions. The results came from a long experimental campaign, heat fluxes evaluation and statistical analyses. The thermal behaviour of the experimental green façade was analysed all year round, highlighting differences between warm and cold periods and between time of the day. The main advantage was assessed in terms of energy saving, defined as heat flux reduction through the wall covered with vegetation in comparison with an unvegetated wall. The study pointed out that energy saving was achieved throughout the year, but in different time of the day based on the season. A daytime energy saving was obtained in warm periods due to the shading effect and the plants evapotranspira...

Green Facade Systems as Technology of Removing Heat from Indoor Environment
Green Facade Systems as Technology of Removing Heat from Indoor Environment2019 •
By increasing in population and urbanization, a huge substantial pressure is imposed on resources and the environment. Urban developers, architects and engineers search for areas to plant vegetation. In dense cities, green facades and roofs can be a solution to create urban green. Besides a modern concept, it increases the ratio of greenery in urban builtup area and reveals urban green spaces. To reduce the energy consumption, the concept of nearly zero energy building (NZEBs) is important and application of sustainable forms of energy are some of the major steps taken in this direction.Different guidelines drive EU countries to use greening systemsgreen roofs and green façades-as a sustainable strategy to maximize environmental buildings performance. That topic is implemented in consistency to an Italian standard (UNI 11235:2015). The UNI 11235 contains the instructions for designing, building up, monitoring and maintaining the green roofs. The paper was focused to know the types of green façade systems and their mechanisms, to understand the advantages and disadvantages of green façade, and to conclude with recommendations which improve the building performance.
