The Soviet experience is often described in terms of a historical deviation. Such descriptions represent the Russian Revolution, Bolshevik reforms, and the Soviet way of life as a rupture and distortion of a "natural" historical development followed by the nations of the First World. And yet the legacy of Soviet efforts to build a Communist society continues to reverberate throughout the world as the only historically realized alternative to modern capitalism. Soviet dreams of social justice, equal opportunities, responsible citizenship were, after all, not much different from many Western forms of social and political imagination. In many ways, Communist modernity had gone awry. Women's empowerment of the early Bolshevik period was followed by Stalinist pronatalist policies. Universal brotherhood first gave way to the Stalinist repressions and then to late socialist experience of social alienation. Intellectual vibrancy of the Soviet "roaring twenties" was replaced by dogmatic Marxism. Still, the Soviet historical experience provides a unique perspective on global modernity and its predicaments and offers non-conventional ways of thinking about the global challenges we face these days.
