Staff-Care by Chaplains during COVID-19

The text deals with the experience of Czech hospital chaplains in 2020. Specifi cally, it concerns the period during the spring and autumn waves of the pandemic caused by the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus which leads to a viral disease known as covid-19. The article builds on data obtained through an online questionnaire and subsequent ten interviews with hospital chaplains. The results of the research are presented in four thematic blocks: chaplain and institutions, chaplain and staff , chaplain and patient, and the chaplain himself. Based on a qualitative analysis of the data, we conclude that the pandemic aff ected the self-concept of many chaplains. It mainly depended on their eff ectiveness, that is, the possibility of applying their skills, in the hospital during the pandemic. In many cases, the pandemic crisis has accelerated the development of relations with the institution and staff , for better or worse. The position of the chaplain in the hospital before the outbreak of the pandemic proved to be crucial. The work with patients themselves did not usually undergo a fundamental change; the chaplains often functioned here as a substitute for forbidden visits. At the end of the article, we present some practical recommendations resulting from our data.

The article explores hospital chaplains perspective on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the provision of spiritual care in Poland. Semi-structured interviews with sixteen hospital chaplains providing spiritual care in hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic were performed. Six main themes emerged during the interviews: chaplains' experience of the pandemic, chaplaincy during the outbreak, patients' needs, health professionals needs, social stigma and discriminatory behaviours against chaplains, and the importance of spiritual care during the crisis. Results indicate that although the COVID-19 crisis has limited the possibilities of providing spiritual care in hospitals and has changed its nature, it has positively impacted the visibility of hospital chaplaincy. It also underpins the contribution of hospital chaplains to modern healthcare practice and suggests that chaplains role as key healthcare workers should be further recognized and their integration into the healthcare system is required.

Drawing from both the qualitative free-text responses and quantitative responses to an international survey of 1657 chaplains serving during the SARS-Cov-19 pandemic, we explore chaplains' emotional responses to the pandemic and how emotion connects to self-care. This paper reports on the modes of self-care practiced by chaplains, including modes reported as unavailable due to pandemic restrictions. Lastly, we explore how effective spiritual care leadership may mediate chaplain emotions and ultimately chaplain self-care.

The responses of chaplains providing care in health services during the Covid-19 pandemic showed that they both learned new skills and taught these to others while working in environments made unfamiliar by personal protective equipment and social distancing. This paper discusses the responses of the participants as they relate to education and training as well as suggesting new content and styles of education to meet the needs of chaplains in future similar events.

Chaplain leadership may have played a pivotal role in shaping chaplains’ roles in health care amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. We convened an international expert panel to identify expert perception on key chaplain leadership factors. Six leadership themes of professional confidence, engaging and trust-building with executives, decision-making, innovation and creativity, building integrative and trusting connections with colleagues, and promoting cultural competencies emerged as central to determining chaplains’ integration, perceived value, and contributions during the pandemic.

This article presents an exploration of the changing experiences of six chaplains employed by a large care provider (LCP) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interviews carried out over a ten-month period with six chaplains during the pandemic highlighted three key themes relating to their experiences in care homes during the crisis: (i) adapting work practices; (ii) mental health and well-being; (iii) giving and receiving support. In the context of a worldwide pandemic, this study highlights the issues experienced by chaplains in residential and aged care homes at the epicentre of COVID-19-related deaths in the United Kingdom.

The aim of this review was to explore the evidence surrounding patients and families’ expression of spirituality, spiritual needs or spiritual support within healthcare settings during the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of nursing practice. While there is a plethora of research and publications related to COVID-19 and there are reports of increasing attention to nurses’ psychological distress, there is little understanding of experiences related to patients’ expression of spirituality, spiritual needs or spiritual support within healthcare settings during the COVID-19 pandemic. A scoping review was conducted to search and select potential studies and undertake data extraction and synthesis. Twenty-one studies published between March 2020 and August 2021 were identified.
